How the Oni Gauntlet works
The Oni Gauntlet is the talent tree in Way of the Sword. You spend yellow (veteran) and red souls to unlock nodes. There are 7 tiers; the first 3 are linear, and tiers 4โ7 split into three branches โ Parry, Issen, and Soul. You can mix branches, but each node past tier 4 costs 1.4ร the previous one, so the build you commit to at tier 4 is the build you keep for the rest of the run.
Soul color rules
- Red souls: weapon upgrades, Rune Sword tokens, level-up base stats.
- Yellow souls: Oni Gauntlet nodes, parry talents.
- Purple souls: passive unlocks (drop rate, HP regen).
- White souls: Bishamon-only upgrades, true-ending materials.
Build 1: Beginner (Chapters 1โ4)
The beginner build is forgiving. It leans on Onimaru+2's parry cancel to soak up early-game damage and stock yellow souls for tier 3.
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | Onimaru+2 | Parry cancel from tier 2 |
| Secondary | Kaneshige+0 (once found) | Multi-hit Issen unlock |
| Tier 1โ3 | All Parry nodes | +18% parry window, +12% parry damage |
| Tier 4 | First Parry node (no branch split yet) | Safe early commitment |
Budget: ~3,200 red souls (Onimaru+2) + 4,500 yellow souls (tiers 1โ3). Earnable by end of Chapter 4 if you clear every Sokushi patrol.
Build 2: Mid-Game (Chapters 5โ9)
Once you have Tachibana Yuki, swap the secondary and start funding the multi-hit Issen branch. This is the highest sustained DPS path in the game.
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | Kaneshige+3 | Multi-hit Issen, 240 base ATK |
| Secondary | Tachibana Yuki+1 | Soul Siphon passive |
| Tier 4โ5 | Issen branch (2 nodes) | +25% Issen damage, +1 hit chain |
| Tier 6 | One Soul node (Soul Siphon +1) | 1.7ร red soul drops |
Budget: ~7,800 red souls (Kaneshige+3 + Yuki+1) + 9,200 yellow souls (Issen branch). Yuki passive pays this back within 2 hours of farming.
Build 3: True Ending (Chapters 10โ13)
The true-ending build is gated behind Bishamon, which means you have to commit in Chapter 12. It is the only build that clears the final boss on Hard without chip damage.
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | Bishamon+4 | True-ending damage threshold |
| Secondary | Tachibana Yuki+2 | Soul Siphon +2 = 2.0ร red drops |
| Tier 4โ7 | Full Soul branch (4 nodes) | Dual-color soul farming |
| Enryuu | Off-hand only | Stagger break on tough adds |
Budget: ~12,000 red souls + 14,000 yellow souls + 2,400 white souls (Bishamon only). You need a full second run of the Chapter 6 arena with Yuki+2 equipped just to fund this.
Stat breakpoints to know
There are three soft caps that matter in Way of the Sword:
- ATK 180 โ unlocks the first Oni Art for any weapon. Soft cap, past 180 the curve flattens.
- HP 1,200 โ survives one Chapter 11 boss combo. Below 1,200 you will be one-shot on Hard.
- Parry window 12 frames โ base 6, tier 3 talent brings it to 12. This is the point where the parry-cancel build feels consistent.
Common mistakes
- Spending white souls on anything but Bishamon. White souls only drop from legendary Genma and the dual-color soul node. Burning them on a non-Bishamon upgrade is unrecoverable.
- Branching before tier 4. Tier 1โ3 is linear, so the choice is free. Once you cross into tier 4 you have to pick a branch โ and each branch cross is a 1.4ร cost multiplier.
- Skipping Tachibana Yuki. The Soul Siphon passive is the single best economic talent in the game. Even on a non-farming build, equip it as your off-hand.
- Ignoring the Enryuu stagger. Enryuu's level-3 Oni Art breaks Genma formation. If you are struggling with groups, swap Enryuu in for two encounters and swap back.
Build vs. playstyle
- If you like parrying everything: Full Parry branch (beginner build, push to tier 7 with Bishamon).
- If you like high-DPS windows: Full Issen branch (mid-game build, capstone is the 5-hit Issen chain).
- If you like farming and route efficiency: Full Soul branch (true-ending build, all other builds are slower to fund).
