Graphics Settings Breakdown
Onimusha: Way of the Sword uses Capcom's RE Engine, which means it's well-optimized but offers a wide range of graphical toggles. Understanding what each setting does and how it impacts performance is the first step to finding your ideal configuration. The game targets 60 FPS at 1080p on recommended hardware, but the actual results vary significantly based on your settings choices.
Display Settings
Resolution is the single biggest performance lever. The game renders at your chosen resolution before any upscaling is applied. For most GPUs, native 1080p is the sweet spot — it delivers sharp visuals without crushing performance. If you're targeting 1440p or 4K, you will need upscaling (DLSS or FSR) to maintain stable frame rates, especially in dense combat encounters.
DLSS / FSR (upscaling) is where most of your optimization happens. Both technologies render the game at a lower internal resolution and upscale to your display resolution, dramatically reducing GPU load. We cover the comparison in detail below.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword's ray tracing implementation covers reflections and global illumination. It looks stunning — the wet Kyoto streets reflecting neon-like Malice energy is one of the game's showcase visuals. But it costs 30–40% of your frame rate. Unless you have an RTX 4070 Ti or better, disable ray tracing and rely on the game's excellent baked lighting and screen-space reflections. You lose very little visual fidelity and gain enormous headroom.
DLSS vs FSR Comparison
Both NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR are available in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The choice between them depends on your GPU manufacturer and your quality expectations.
NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 (NVIDIA GPUs)
DLSS uses dedicated tensor cores on NVIDIA RTX GPUs to deliver superior upscaling quality. In Onimusha, DLSS at Quality mode (67% internal resolution) produces results that are nearly indistinguishable from native 1080p in most scenes. The key advantages are sharper detail in motion, fewer temporal artifacts, and better stability during fast camera movements — which happen constantly in a melee action game.
AMD FSR 3 (All GPUs)
FSR 3 is the universal option — it works on NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPUs. Quality is good but not quite at DLSS level, especially in motion. You'll notice slight softness in fine details like hair strands and distant textures, and occasional shimmering on thin geometry like fences and weapon edges. FSR 3 does include Frame Generation on supported hardware, which can help push frame rates above 60 FPS on mid-range GPUs.
Recommendation
If you have an RTX GPU, use DLSS — it's the clear winner for image quality in this game. If you have an AMD or Intel GPU, FSR 3 is your best option, and setting it to Quality mode gives the best balance of performance and clarity. Avoid using either at Ultra Performance mode — the internal resolution drop is too aggressive and makes combat hard to read.
Optimal Settings by GPU Tier
High-End: RTX 4070 and Above
You can run the game near-maxed at 1440p with DLSS Quality. Enable ray tracing if you have a 4070 Ti or better — the game looks exceptional with RT on. Set shadows to Ultra, textures to Ultra (you have the VRAM), volumetric to High, and particles to High. You should see 70–90 FPS in standard encounters and 55–70 FPS in dense boss arenas with RT enabled. Disable RT if you want consistent 90+ FPS everywhere.
Mid-Range: RTX 3060 / RX 6700 XT
This is the game's recommended tier, and it shows. Run at 1080p native or 1440p with DLSS/FSR Quality. Set shadows to High, textures to High (you have 8–12GB VRAM, which is enough), volumetric to Low, particles to High, and disable ray tracing. Expect 60–80 FPS in standard combat and 50–65 FPS in boss fights. If you experience drops below 50 FPS, reduce volumetric effects to Off — that single toggle is usually enough to stabilize performance.
Low-End: GTX 1660 Super / RX 6600
Run at 1080p with FSR 3 at Quality or Balanced mode. Set shadows to Low, textures to Medium (the 1660 Super's 6GB VRAM can handle Medium textures comfortably), volumetric to Off, particles to Medium, and disable ray tracing. Target 45–60 FPS. The game is playable at 45 FPS but the parry system benefits significantly from 60 FPS, so prioritize frame rate over visuals. If you're consistently below 50 FPS, switch FSR to Balanced (77% internal resolution) for a noticeable boost.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword's deflect and Issen systems rely on precise frame-level timing. At 30 FPS, the timing window for a perfect deflect is approximately 5 frames — at 60 FPS, it's 10 frames. Higher frame rates give you more forgiveness on every timed input. If you have to choose between prettier graphics and higher FPS, always choose FPS for this game. 60 FPS is the minimum target; 120+ FPS is ideal if your monitor supports it.
Common Performance Issues & Fixes
FPS Drops in Dense Combat
The most common complaint is frame rate drops during multi-enemy encounters, particularly when particle effects from soul absorption overlap with Malice fog and enemy attack animations. The fix is straightforward: reduce Volumetric Effects to Low or Off. This single setting accounts for 40–50% of the GPU load spike during dense encounters. Particle effects should stay at High or Medium because they're important for gameplay readability — you need to see soul orbs and attack indicators clearly.
Stuttering on First Launch
RE Engine games compile shaders on first launch, which can cause stuttering for the first 5–10 minutes. This is normal and resolves itself as the shader cache builds. If stuttering persists beyond the first session, verify your game files through Steam and update your GPU drivers to the latest version. Capcom typically releases day-one driver optimizations.
Audio Desync
Some players report audio-visual desync where parry sound effects play slightly before or after the visual. This is a frame pacing issue, not a bug. Enable V-Sync or set a frame rate limit in NVIDIA Control Panel / AMD Adrenalin to match your monitor's refresh rate. This stabilizes frame pacing and eliminates the desync. Do not use V-Sync if it introduces noticeable input lag — for competitive timing, use the frame rate limiter instead.
VRAM Overflow Crashes
If the game crashes to desktop during large boss arenas, you may be exceeding your GPU's VRAM. Reduce texture quality by one tier (Ultra to High, High to Medium) and the crashes should stop. The game doesn't have a VRAM usage indicator, so if you're running close to your GPU's VRAM limit with Ultra textures, it's safer to drop to High preemptively.
