- Benkei is a warrior monk you fight twice — once during a bridge battle (first encounter, easier), then a second time during the ultimate assault (much harder).
- Both encounters drop specific trophies: Benkei: Down but Not Out (Bronze) and Drawn to Benkei (Bronze).
- Use the bridge encounter to learn his parry timing before facing the harder second fight.

1. Boss Overview
Benkei is a legendary warrior monk whose strength rivals that of any Genma in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. He does not wield Genma corruption — his threat comes from pure martial skill. He fights with a wide-handled monk's staff, alternating between sweeping horizontal strikes and overhead crushes that are designed to overwhelm the player's parry timing.
He is encountered twice: once during a bridge battle (the easier first encounter, which most players reach in the early-to-mid game), and again during the climactic "Ultimate Assault" mission (a much harder rematch). Both encounters reward distinct trophies and confirm him as a recurring narrative thread.
2. Two Encounters
Encounter 1 — Bridge Battle
The first Benkei fight takes place on a narrow bridge. The arena is small and forces engagement — there is nowhere to retreat. This is intentional: the bridge encounter is a parry-timing tutorial.
- Trophy unlocked: Benkei: Down but Not Out (Bronze) — awarded for repelling Benkei during the bridge duel.
- Difficulty: Medium. Benkei cycles through a fixed pattern of staff swings with predictable telegraphs.
- Arena: Narrow bridge. Lateral movement is limited — focus on vertical dodges and parries.
Encounter 2 — Ultimate Assault
The second Benkei fight is part of the climactic ultimate-assault mission. He returns with an expanded moveset, faster combo chains, and significantly higher damage output.
- Trophy unlocked: Drawn to Benkei (Bronze) — awarded for defeating Benkei once and for all during the ultimate assault.
- Difficulty: Hard. His staff combos extend to 4–5 hits and integrate unblockable mixups.
- Arena: Larger open area. Lateral repositioning matters — do not get cornered.
3. Attack Patterns
| Phase | Attack | Tell | Best Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| E1 | Horizontal Sweep | Staff drags across body, low | Jump or vertical parry |
| E1 | Overhead Crush | Two-handed raise, brief pause at apex | Perfect parry for Issen window |
| E1 | Pole Vault Kick | Staff plants, body launches forward | Side-step lateral, punish recovery |
| E2 | 5-Hit Staff Combo | Sweeping rhythm with one delayed strike | Parry first 3, dodge the delayed 4th, parry the 5th |
| E2 | Whirlwind Sweep | Spinning AoE with the staff | Focus Evade or jump, punish after the spin ends |
| E2 | Unblockable Thrust | Body lowers, glow at staff tip | Focus Evade — cannot be parried |
4. Strategy
First Encounter (Bridge)
- Learn his patterns on the bridge. The narrow arena removes positioning as a variable — you only need to focus on parry timing.
- Use parry timing on the Overhead Crush. His overhead has a long tell and a long recovery. This is your Issen window.
- Save heavy consumables for Encounter 2. The bridge fight is meant to be cleared with default resources.
Second Encounter (Ultimate Assault)
- He uses more aggressive combos. The 5-Hit Staff Combo is the centerpiece — parry discipline beats panic mashing here.
- Recommend full Skill Tree unlocks. Tier 3 Parry Window+ and Issen Mastery are mandatory for clean clears.
- Do not get cornered. The Whirlwind Sweep punishes you if you are near a wall. Maintain mid-arena positioning.
- Save Oni Awakening for the second half of his HP bar. Encounter 2's stamina break is shorter than Encounter 1's — Awakening guarantees the burn-through.
5. Recommended Build
- Full Tier 3 skills unlocked (Issen Mastery, Parry Window+, Health Pool III)
- Bring Raizan (Lightning katana) for bonus elemental damage on the second encounter
- Reserve Oni Mode meter for Encounter 2 — do not waste it on the bridge fight
- Fencer's Strength Charm for higher parry follow-up damage
6. Rewards
Defeating Benkei grants:
- Benkei's armor set — wearable after the second encounter
- Benkei's Prayer Beads (charm) — +5% parry window, stacks with Parry Window+ skill
- 1000 yellow souls — combined across both encounters
- Trophy: Benkei: Down but Not Out (Bronze) — bridge encounter
- Trophy: Drawn to Benkei (Bronze) — ultimate assault
