1. Boss Overview

Byakue is the first true roadblock you will encounter in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. He is a hulking white Genma covered in talismans — sheets of sacred paper that hang in place of fur across his back and arms. He swings a massive axe with the grace of a lumberjack and the reach of a construction crane.

Design-wise, Byakue is a tutorial boss. Every attack he has exists to teach you one of the three core defensive verbs: dodge, deflect, parry. Learn the rule — dodge when not swinging, deflect when he is — and the fight is over in two clean phases.

2. Attack Patterns

PhaseAttackTellCounter
P1Axe Swing (single)Sideways chop, slow wind-upDeflect — Issen on recovery
P1Axe Combo (2–3 hits)Repeated horizontal chopsDeflect each, Issen the last swing
P1Shoulder ChargeDrops shoulder and rushes youMUST dodge — cannot be deflected
P1Sprint ChargeLong charge across the arenaMUST dodge (sidestep preferred)
P1Talisman Hair Lash (Blue)Whips talismans forwardPress parry button right before contact

The above table is Phase 1 (100% → 50%). Every axe swing can be deflected, and every deflectable swing can be counter-hit with an Issen. Shoulder charges and sprint charges cannot be deflected — always dodge.

3. Strategy — Phase 1

Byakue's Phase 1 is a clean repetition of one rule: dodge the un-swingable attacks, deflect the swingable attacks, and Issen on the recovery.

4. Enhanced State — Below 50% HP

When Byakue's HP bar drops below half, he enters his Enhanced state. His axe becomes wreathed in Malice (the same red glow that colours Oni energy across the game), and his moveset shifts:

The Enhanced state is more of the same — the new moves are well telegraphed and the same dodge/deflect/Issen rule still applies.

5. Recommended Build (1st Playthrough)

Action Difficulty Starter Build

Charm of HealerBoosts healing received
Charm of ProtectionReduces HP lost when hit
Fencer's Strength CharmBoosts regular attack power
Hozuki PouchDefault — no swap needed

You do not need anything fancy for Byakue. The Charms of Healer and Protection give you safety net for the few hits you will eat on the shoulder/sprint charges, and Fencer's Strength turns your punish windows into real damage. Save the Carnage-only charms (Awakening / Oni Power) for later fights.
