1. Boss Overview
Nue Blue and Nue Red are a matched pair of chimeras. Each one has the body of a large quadruped with a serpent tail, claws, and a horned head. Their defining feature is the tail — it can rise up to shield their face when they anticipate an attack, and below 50% HP it fires electrified orbs that you can deflect back at them.
The Nue fight is the first boss in the game that puts two hostile targets on the field at once. The challenge isn't damage or timing — it's attention. The fight is a clean test of your ability to track two threat sources and never lose awareness of the one you aren't currently hitting.
Critical Rule: Do Not Lock On
Lock-on will hard-focus whichever Nue is closest and let the second Nue beat on you for free. Keep the camera unlocked the entire fight. The second you lock on, you lose the information you need to survive.
2. Attack Patterns
| Who | Attack | Tell | Counter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Both Nue | Claw Swipes | Front claw sweep | Dodge sideways; punish the recovery |
| Both Nue | Lunges | Head-first charge forward | Sidestep; counter with a quick slash |
| Both Nue | Head and Tail Smashes | Rears up, slams head or tail down | Dodge the slam; hit the recovery |
| Both Nue | Tail Shield (defensive) | Raises tail to cover face | Break the guard with the Oni Gauntlet |
| Below 50% | Electrified Orbs from Tail | Tail glows, fires orbs at you | Deflect them back at the Nue — they return damage |
3. Strategy
The Nue fight is built on three rules.
- DO NOT lock on. Lock-on hard-focuses one target and lets the other beat on you for free. Keep the camera unlocked the whole fight.
- Stay aggressive to whichever Nue is nearest. You are not trying to split damage evenly. Pick one, burn it down, then take the other.
- Land katana slashes between their attacks. Both Nue have generous recoveries. A 2–3 hit combo after every dodge is plenty.
- Always keep half an eye on the other Nue. The single biggest mistake is hitting one Nue while the other closes in unopposed. Keep the camera wide and re-orient often.
- When the tail rises to shield the face, break guard with the Oni Gauntlet. Otherwise your combos bounce off and the Nue recovers for free.
- Below 50%, deflect electrified orbs back at them. Each orb sent back staggers the Nue and opens a free punish window.
- Once one Nue falls, finish the other with the same approach. The fight gets easier in 1-v-1 because you can finally lock on without penalty.
4. Recommended Build (1st Playthrough)
Action Difficulty Starter Build + Range/Patience Charms
Standard 1st-playthrough build, with a focus on anything that improves your deflect window. The Nue fight rewards clean deflects more than raw damage, so any charm that widens your parry window pays for itself in the second half of the fight.
5. Rewards
Defeating Nue Blue & Nue Red grants:
- Souls — yellow soul payout (varies by difficulty).
- Nue Talons — crafting reagent for a lightning-element weapon.
- Progress unlock — story progression.
6. Common Mistakes
- Locking on. Hard-focus on one Nue turns the other into a free damage source. Keep the camera loose.
- Trying to split damage evenly. Two half-dead Nue are far more dangerous than one dead Nue. Pick one and burn it.
- Ignoring the tail-shield mechanic. A Nue in tail-shield mode will deflect every regular katana swing. Use the Oni Gauntlet to break its guard before committing to combos.
- Not deflecting orbs at low HP. The orbs do real damage if you block them normally. Deflect them back and turn the fight's hardest moment into its easiest damage window.
