How Oni Armaments Work
Oni Armaments are temporary demon weapons accessed through the Oni Gauntlet. Unlike your katana — which is always available and upgraded permanently — armaments are powered by blue souls. Fill your Oni Power Gauge by absorbing blue soul orbs from defeated enemies, then activate an armament to temporarily replace your katana with a devastating demon-forged weapon.
Each armament lasts for a limited duration (roughly 15-20 seconds depending on the weapon and your upgrades). During that time, your attacks change completely — new combos, new properties, and a special attack that consumes a large chunk of your gauge but deals extraordinary damage. When the gauge empties or the duration expires, the armament deactivates and you return to your katana.
The Oni Power Gauge is the scarcest resource in the game. Blue souls are the rarest drop, and enemies can absorb them before you do. Every armament activation is a significant investment. Wasting an armament on weak enemies when a boss is coming up is the most common resource mistake. Save your Oni Power for moments that matter.
All Four Oni Armaments
You unlock armaments progressively through the story. Each one is introduced in a story-beat where the Lady Oni explains its origin and purpose. By the mid-game, you have access to all four and can switch between them freely (though only one can be active at a time).
Nitou — The Twin Demon Blades
Nitou is the first armament you unlock, and it's the most versatile. It transforms your single katana into a pair of demon blades — one in each hand — enabling rapid multi-hit combos that excel at sustained damage and crowd control. Nitou's defining trait is its lifesteal property: every hit generates yellow soul orbs, effectively healing you through aggression.
| Stat | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Attack Speed | Very Fast | Fastest armament; 3-hit light combo in under 0.5s |
| Per-Hit Damage | Low | Compensated by hit count and lifesteal |
| Combo Potential | High | Long combos possible; chains well into Issen |
| Enemy Posture Drain | Medium | Many hits means cumulative posture pressure |
| Lifesteal | ~5% per hit | Yellow souls on every hit; sustained healing |
| Special Attack | Cross Slash | 4-hit X-pattern attack; massive lifesteal burst |
| Oni Power Cost (activation) | Low | Cheapest armament to activate |
| Duration | ~18s | Standard duration |
When to Use Nitou
- When your health is low. The lifesteal property means every hit heals. If you're in danger and have blue souls to spend, Nitou is your recovery tool.
- Against large groups of standard enemies. Nitou's fast, wide sweeping attacks hit multiple targets, generating healing from every connection.
- When you need safe pressure. Low commitment per swing means low risk of being punished for a whiff.
- Before a Chain Issen attempt. Nitou's rapid hits drain multiple enemies' posture simultaneously, priming the group for chain kills.
Chimei — The Demon Hammer
Chimei is the heavy hitter of the armaments. It replaces your katana with a massive demon-forged hammer that trades speed for devastating single-hit damage. Chimei's defining trait is posture destruction: each hit drains enemy posture at an extraordinary rate, and the special attack can break even armored enemies in a single hit. Chimei is your answer to tanks, heavy enemies, and bosses with large posture pools.
| Stat | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Attack Speed | Very Slow | Long wind-ups; commit to every swing |
| Per-Hit Damage | Very High | Highest per-hit damage of any armament |
| Combo Potential | Low | 1-2 hits max; not a combo weapon |
| Enemy Posture Drain | Extreme | 1-2 hits can break standard enemies; 2-3 for heavy |
| Armor Penetration | High | Deals full damage to armored enemies |
| Special Attack | Earth Shatter | Slam creates AoE shockwave; massive posture break |
| Oni Power Cost (activation) | High | Expensive — save for heavy targets |
| Duration | ~15s | Shorter duration due to power |
When to Use Chimei
- Against armored or heavy enemies. Enemies that can't be one-shot by Issen need their posture broken first. Chimei breaks posture faster than anything else.
- During boss fights on posture-broken windows. When a boss staggers, activate Chimei and land the Earth Shatter for maximum posture and health damage.
- When you need AoE crowd control. The Earth Shatter special creates a shockwave that staggers all nearby enemies, buying you space.
- In Chain Issen sequences targeting heavy enemies. Activate Chimei before the chain starts, use a normal hit to break a heavy enemy's posture, then Issen them as the first chain link.
Chimei's wind-up animations are long. A whiffed Chimei heavy attack leaves Musashi in recovery for nearly a full second — an eternity in Onimusha combat. Only swing Chimei when the target is committed to an attack (use the hit as a deflect-Issen setup), when they're already staggered, or when they're at range and closing slowly. Never swing Chimei at a fast, unpredictable enemy without a clear opening.
Fuukon — The Wind Blades
Fuukon replaces your katana with ethereal wind blades that extend your range significantly and create area denial. Unlike Nitou's close-range flurries or Chimei's heavy impacts, Fuukon controls space. Its attacks send wind projectiles that travel a set distance, damaging and staggering enemies in their path. Fuukon's defining trait is the ability to hit enemies at range while maintaining defensive positioning.
| Stat | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Attack Speed | Medium | Balanced speed; wind projectile adds range |
| Per-Hit Damage | Medium | Consistent damage across range |
| Range | Long (projectile) | Wind blades travel ~5m before dissipating |
| Enemy Posture Drain | Medium | Consistent but not exceptional |
| Area Denial | Excellent | Wind paths create zones enemies avoid |
| Special Attack | Typhoon Surge | Spiraling wind around Musashi; hits all adjacent enemies |
| Oni Power Cost (activation) | Medium | Moderate cost for flexible tool |
| Duration | ~18s | Standard duration |
When to Use Fuukon
- Against ranged enemies (archers, spellcasters). Wind projectiles close the gap without requiring you to run through open ground under fire.
- When you need to control space in multi-enemy arenas. Wind paths create danger zones that prevent enemies from approaching from certain angles.
- When your posture is low and you need distance. Fuukon lets you deal damage from range while your posture recovers, avoiding the risk of close-quarters blocking.
- In arenas with environmental hazards. Push enemies into braziers and off ledges from a safe distance using wind projectiles.
Chouhou — The Demon Whip
Chouhou is the most specialized armament. It transforms your weapon into a demon whip with extraordinary range and a unique interruption property: attacks from Chouhou can interrupt enemy attack animations mid-wind-up, even on enemies that are normally hyper-armored during their startup. This makes Chouhou the ultimate counter-tool — not through timing like Issen, but through sheer reach and interruption priority.
| Stat | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Attack Speed | Medium-Slow | Whip has travel time; not instant |
| Per-Hit Damage | Low-Medium | Interruption is the value, not raw damage |
| Range | Very Long | Longest reach of any armament; ~7m |
| Enemy Posture Drain | Low | Not a posture weapon |
| Interruption Priority | Extreme | Breaks hyper-armor startup animations |
| Special Attack | Soul Bind | Whip wraps enemy; pulls them to you and staggers |
| Oni Power Cost (activation) | Medium | Worth it for the interruption tool |
| Duration | ~17s | Slightly shorter than average |
When to Use Chouhou
- Against enemies with hyper-armor charge attacks. These enemies can't be staggered by normal attacks during their wind-up, but Chouhou's interruption property breaks through.
- When you need to isolate a single target from a group. Soul Bind pulls one enemy toward you, separating them from the pack for a 1v1.
- When enemies are spread across a wide arena. Chouhou's range lets you pressure distant targets without repositioning.
- As a defensive tool against aggressive bosses. Interrupting a boss's charge attack mid-wind-up prevents damage and creates a punish window.
Chouhou's Soul Bind special attack pulls the target to you and staggers them. In the stagger window, switch back to your katana (or another armament) and land your highest-damage combo. Soul Bind is essentially a free setup — the Oni Power cost of activating Chouhou is justified by the Soul Bind setup alone, even if you deactivate immediately after.

Oni Power Management
Effective armament use isn't just about picking the right weapon — it's about managing your Oni Power gauge across an entire encounter. Blue souls are scarce, and every activation is an investment. Here are the management principles that separate efficient players from wasteful ones.
- Fill before you activate. Don't activate an armament with a partial gauge unless it's an emergency. A full gauge means maximum duration, which means more value per blue soul invested.
- Use the special attack late. The special attack consumes a large chunk of gauge. Use normal armament attacks first to get value from the activation, then fire the special as a finisher.
- Deactivate manually when the job is done. If you've cleared the enemies you needed to clear and still have gauge remaining, you can deactivate to preserve remaining Oni Power for the next encounter. Don't let it drain to zero on empty air.
- Match the armament to the encounter. Activating Chimei against a group of fast, weak enemies wastes its posture-destruction potential. Nitou or Fuukon would be more efficient. Save Chimei for the heavy targets.
Upgrade Synergies
Certain katana upgrades directly enhance Oni Armaments. The Armament Synergy upgrade branch increases armament duration, reduces Oni Power costs, and amplifies special attack damage. If you find yourself relying on armaments frequently — which is a valid and powerful playstyle — prioritize this upgrade branch early.
