The Four Upgrade Branches
Your katana's upgrade tree splits into four distinct branches. Each branch has 5 tiers of upgrades, and red souls are the currency. You can invest in multiple branches simultaneously — there's no lock-in — but red souls are finite, so every investment has an opportunity cost. Understanding what each branch does and when to invest is the key to building an effective blade.
Branch 1: Attack Power
The simplest and most universally useful branch. Attack Power increases the raw damage of every katana swing — both one-handed and two-handed, both light and heavy attacks. The scaling is straightforward: each tier adds a flat percentage to your base damage, compounding across all five tiers.

- Tier 2: +8% attack power (cumulative: +16%)
- Tier 3: +10% attack power (cumulative: +26%)
- Tier 4: +10% attack power (cumulative: +36%)
- Tier 5: +14% attack power (cumulative: +50%)
At max tier, your katana deals 50% more damage than base. This benefits every combat situation equally — more damage per swing means fewer swings needed, which means less posture spent. Attack Power is never a bad investment.
Branch 2: Issen Damage
This branch amplifies the damage of Issen and Break Issen attacks specifically. It does not affect normal attacks. For players who build around the Issen and Chain Issen systems, this branch offers the highest single-target damage ceiling in the game.
- Tier 1: +12% Issen damage
- Tier 2: +12% Issen damage (cumulative: +24%)
- Tier 3: +15% Issen damage (cumulative: +39%)
- Tier 4: +15% Issen damage (cumulative: +54%)
- Tier 5: +21% Issen damage (cumulative: +75%)
At max tier, Issen deals 75% more damage. Against bosses that can't be one-shot, this translates to significantly faster boss kills. Against standard enemies, a maxed Issen branch means overkill — but the boss damage makes it worthwhile for players who prioritize Issen consistency.
Branch 3: Armament Synergy
Armament Synergy enhances your Oni Armaments in three ways: it increases armament duration, reduces the Oni Power cost of activation, and amplifies the damage of armament special attacks. This is the branch for players who rely heavily on Oni Armaments as a core part of their combat loop.
- Tier 1: +10% armament duration
- Tier 2: +10% duration, -8% Oni Power cost
- Tier 3: +10% duration, -8% cost, +15% special attack damage
- Tier 4: +10% duration, -8% cost, +15% special damage
- Tier 5: +10% duration, -8% cost, +20% special damage
At max tier, armaments last roughly 50% longer, cost roughly 24% less Oni Power, and deal 50% more special attack damage. For armament-heavy playstyles, this is the single most impactful branch — it means more activations per blue soul earned, and each activation hits harder.
Branch 4: Posture Efficiency
Posture Efficiency reduces the posture cost of every katana action. Light attacks, heavy attacks, and stance switches all cost less posture with each tier invested. This branch doesn't increase your damage — it increases your sustain, letting you fight longer, defend more, and maintain aggression without running out of posture.
- Tier 1: -8% posture cost on all attacks
- Tier 2: -8% posture cost (cumulative: -16%)
- Tier 3: -10% posture cost (cumulative: -26%)
- Tier 4: -10% posture cost (cumulative: -36%)

At max tier, all attacks cost 50% less posture. This is enormous for defensive play and extended boss fights. You can deflect more, attack more, and sustain pressure far longer than an unupgraded player. Posture Efficiency doesn't make you hit harder — it makes you last longer, which in a game where healing comes from aggression is an indirect damage increase.
You can invest in multiple branches simultaneously. A balanced build might have Tier 3 in Attack Power, Tier 2 in Posture Efficiency, and Tier 1 in Issen Damage. The question isn't which single branch to max — it's how to distribute your finite red souls across all four for maximum overall effectiveness at your current progression stage.
Upgrade Priority by Progression Stage
Red soul availability increases as you progress, and the enemies you face change. Your upgrade priorities should shift accordingly. Here's the recommended investment strategy at each stage of the campaign.

It's tempting to dump all early red souls into one branch to max it quickly. Resist this. A Tier 3 Attack Power with zero Posture Efficiency is worse than Tier 2 Attack Power with Tier 2 Posture Efficiency. Spread your early investments to get a baseline in multiple branches, then specialize in the mid-to-late game when you know your preferred playstyle.
Playstyle-Specific Builds
By the mid-game, you should have a sense of which combat tools you gravitate toward. The three builds below are designed for distinct playstyles. Each one assumes you've followed the progression priority above and are now specializing.
Build 1: Issen-Focused ("The Perfect Frame")
For players who live and die by the Issen counter. Every fight is a sequence of deflects leading to a single devastating Issen, often chained across multiple enemies.
- Issen Damage: T5 — Maximum Issen output. This is the build's identity.
- Posture Efficiency: T3 — Sustain through deflect chains. You need posture to keep deflecting until the Issen opportunity arises.
- Attack Power: T2 — Minimal investment for non-Issen damage during boss posture-broken windows.
- Armament Synergy: T0 — Skip entirely. This build doesn't rely on armaments.
Strengths: Fastest standard enemy clears, highest single-target burst damage, elegant and satisfying combat flow. Weaknesses: Struggles against enemies that can't be Issen'd (armored targets without posture break), no armament utility for crowd control.
Build 2: Armament-Focused ("Oni Surge")
For players who treat Oni Armaments as their primary damage tool. The katana is the fallback; the armaments are the main event.
- Armament Synergy: T5 — Maximum duration, minimum cost, maximum special damage. The core of the build.
- Posture Efficiency: T2 — Sustain between armament activations with katana attacks.
- Attack Power: T2 — Better katana damage for when armaments are on cooldown.
- Issen Damage: T0 — Skip. This build kills with armaments, not Issens.
Strengths: Versatile with four different armaments for any situation, excellent AoE and crowd control, strong against bosses with Chimei. Weaknesses: Dependent on blue soul economy — if you can't absorb blue souls efficiently, you run out of gas. Vulnerable during armament cooldown windows.
Build 3: Balanced ("Master Swordsman")
For players who want no weaknesses and the flexibility to adapt to any encounter. This build doesn't excel at any one thing but performs well at everything.
- Attack Power: T4 — Strong baseline damage for all situations.
- Posture Efficiency: T3 — Reliable sustain for extended fights.
- Issen Damage: T2 — Meaningful Issen improvement without over-investing.
- Armament Synergy: T1 — Minimal armament enhancement for occasional use.
Strengths: No bad matchups, adaptable to any encounter, forgiving of mistakes. Weaknesses: Doesn't reach the damage ceiling of the Issen build or the utility ceiling of the Armament build. In the late game, balanced players may feel outperformed by specialized builds on specific encounters.

Upgrade Cost Scaling
Higher tiers cost disproportionately more red souls. The first tier in any branch is cheap and impactful. The fifth tier is expensive and the incremental gain is smaller relative to the investment. This is why spreading early investments across branches is more efficient than maxing one branch immediately.
As a rough guideline, a Tier 1 upgrade costs approximately 200 red souls, Tier 2 costs 500, Tier 3 costs 1,000, Tier 4 costs 1,800, and Tier 5 costs 3,000. The cost-per-percentage-point is best at Tiers 1-2 and worst at Tier 5. Specialize at Tier 5 only when you've already established a solid baseline across the branches you care about.
Final Advice
There's no wrong build, but there are inefficient ones. The most common mistake is investing heavily in Attack Power early while ignoring Posture Efficiency — you hit harder but can't sustain, which means you spend more time recovering than fighting. The second most common mistake is ignoring all branches and hoarding red souls indefinitely — unspent red souls do nothing.
