How Oni Vision Works
Oni Vision is one of the first abilities granted by the Oni Gauntlet, and it serves as your primary tool for uncovering Kyoto's secrets. When activated, the screen takes on an ethereal blue tint and hidden elements of the environment become visible — walls that look solid reveal cracks, shadowy alcoves glow with demonic energy, and faint threads of Malice illuminate like burning veins running through the architecture.
Oni Vision is not a passive toggle. It has a duration (base 4 seconds, upgradeable through the Abilities track), a cooldown (base 12 seconds between activations), and a detection radius (how far from Musashi the vision extends). Upgrading Oni Vision in the Abilities track increases duration by 2 seconds per tier, widens the detection radius by 15% per tier, and reduces the cooldown by 3 seconds per tier. A fully upgraded Oni Vision lasts 10 seconds with a 3-second cooldown and a massive detection radius — essentially letting you keep it active almost continuously.
The ability is activated by holding the designated button (L2 on PS5, Left Trigger on Xbox, ZL on Switch 2). While active, Musashi cannot attack or block — the gauntlet is committed to the vision pulse. This means you need to activate it during safe moments: between fights, after clearing an arena, or when you've created distance from enemies. Using Oni Vision while an enemy is mid-attack is a quick way to take an unblocked hit.
While Oni Vision is active, you cannot attack, block, or absorb souls. Never activate it in the middle of combat unless you've created clear space. The standard rhythm is: clear the arena, pulse Oni Vision to scan for secrets, collect anything you found, then move on. In combat, use it only during brief lulls when enemies are recovering or repositioning.
What Oni Vision Reveals
Oni Vision illuminates six categories of hidden elements in the environment. Each category serves a different purpose — some are critical for finding collectibles, while others provide combat advantages or lore. The table below summarizes everything Oni Vision can reveal.
| Reveal Type | Visual Indicator | Purpose | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hidden Enemies | Red silhouette with glowing eyes | Spot ambushers before they attack | Very common — nearly every new arena |
| Secret Paths | Blue shimmer on walls/floors | Access hidden areas and treasure rooms | Common — 2-3 per area |
| Malice Threads | Pulsing crimson lines on surfaces | Environmental weapons and traversal tools | Moderate — 1-2 per arena, more in Malice-dense areas |
| Breakable Walls | Cracked pattern with orange glow | Hidden rooms, shortcuts, soul caches | Common — 3-5 per chapter |
| Soul Orbs | Glowing orb cluster (color indicates type) | Hidden soul caches in walls and containers | Moderate — 1-2 per area |
| Hidden Containers | Outlined box with subtle shimmer | Upgrade materials, lore documents, permanent upgrades | Moderate — 1-3 per area |
Malice Threads — Environmental Weapons
Malice threads are one of the most interesting hidden elements revealed by Oni Vision. These are strands of concentrated demonic energy that run through walls, floors, ceilings, and objects. When you interact with a Malice thread by attacking it with the katana, it triggers an environmental effect based on the thread's type and location.
Malice threads come in three functional categories:
Explosive Threads
These threads are connected to environmental hazards — explosive barrels, gas vents, unstable structures. Striking the thread detonates the connected hazard, dealing massive area damage to any enemies caught in the blast radius. In combat arenas, explosive threads are the game's version of environmental traps — lure enemies near the thread, strike it, and watch the explosion thin the crowd. The damage is significant enough to one-shot fodder enemies and heavily damage mid-tier threats.
Destructive Threads
Destructive threads connect to breakable walls, collapsed pillars, and sealed doors. Striking these threads shatters the connected object, opening new paths or revealing hidden rooms. These are the primary mechanism behind many secret areas — you won't find the path without Oni Vision, and you can't open it without striking the thread. In some cases, destructive threads also drop debris on enemies below, dealing damage and staggering them.
Traversal Threads
Traversal threads illuminate climbable surfaces, invisible bridges, and hidden ledges that connect different parts of an area. Striking a traversal thread doesn't destroy anything — instead, it activates the connected surface, making it temporarily visible and interactable. Invisible bridges only appear for a few seconds after striking their thread, so you need to move quickly. Hidden ledges extend briefly before retracting. This creates timed traversal puzzles where you need to plan your route before striking the thread.
Explosive Malice threads can turn the tide of difficult arena fights. Before engaging, pulse Oni Vision to locate explosive threads. During the fight, use the deflect parry (tier 3) to steer enemies into the blast zone, then strike the thread. A well-placed explosive thread can clear half the arena in one hit — but you need to position enemies correctly first.
Hidden Path Types
Secret areas in Onimusha: Way of the Sword come in four distinct types, each requiring a different approach to discover and access. Knowing the types helps you systematically search each area rather than relying on random exploration.
Breakable Walls
The most common hidden path type. These are walls that appear solid in normal view but show a cracked pattern with an orange glow under Oni Vision. They require a two-handed stance attack to break — one-handed slashes don't deal enough damage to the wall structure. Behind breakable walls, you'll typically find small treasure rooms containing red soul caches, upgrade materials, or lore documents. Some breakable walls lead to shortcuts that connect different parts of an area, allowing faster traversal on subsequent visits.
The telltale sign of a breakable wall even without Oni Vision: a faint crack line running vertically or diagonally across the surface, accompanied by a subtle dust particle effect. If you notice either, switch to two-handed stance and swing. If the wall takes damage, keep hitting until it shatters.
Secret Ledges
Hidden ledges are platforms that blend into the environment and are invisible without Oni Vision. They appear as blue shimmer lines along cliff faces, building exteriors, and arena walls. To reach a secret ledge, you need to look for the blue shimmer, then jump or climb to the indicated position. The ledge becomes solid only when you're within interaction range — approach it from the correct angle and press the grab/climb button.
Secret ledges often lead to elevated treasure rooms with panoramic views of the area below. They also contain some of the game's best-hidden collectibles, including two of the eight Pillar statues. Missing a secret ledge means missing significant rewards.
Invisible Bridges
Invisible bridges are traversal paths that span gaps between platforms. Under normal view, there's nothing — just empty air and a fatal drop. Under Oni Vision, the bridge appears as a faint blue outline with Malice thread energy running along its length. Striking the Malice thread at the bridge's origin point activates the bridge for approximately 8 seconds, giving you a narrow window to cross.
The challenge with invisible bridges is that some of them are positioned above arena floors where enemies patrol. You may need to clear the arena below before you can safely cross the bridge above, or time your crossing between enemy patrol routes. Fully upgraded Oni Vision is highly recommended for these sections — the extended duration gives you time to spot the bridge, plan your route, and cross before it fades.
Submerged Entrances
Found near water features throughout Kyoto, submerged entrances are hidden underwater gaps that lead to caves and underwater passages. Oni Vision reveals them as blue shimmer points beneath the water surface. To enter, you need to crouch near the water edge and hold the movement input toward the shimmer point — Musashi dives underwater and emerges in a hidden area.
Submerged entrances often contain the Water-type collectibles and soul caches. The underwater areas are brief — typically a single room with a collectible and an exit back to the surface. However, some submerged passages connect two distant parts of an area, functioning as hidden shortcuts that bypass combat encounters entirely.
Optimal Oni Vision Usage Tips
Getting the most out of Oni Vision requires developing a rhythm that integrates it naturally into your exploration and combat flow. These tips will help you use the ability efficiently without leaving yourself vulnerable.
- Pulse at every area transition. When you enter a new area or arena, your first action should be a quick Oni Vision pulse before engaging any enemies. This spots ambushers and maps out the environment's secrets in one scan. The 4-second base duration is enough for a quick sweep if you're standing near the center of the area.
- Combine with stealth scouting. Before entering an arena, use Oni Vision from a safe distance to identify hidden enemies, explosive threads, and breakable walls. This gives you a complete tactical picture before the fight starts and lets you plan your approach — where to steer enemies, which walls to break for shortcuts, and where hidden threats are positioned.
- Re-scan after clearing an arena. Some hidden elements only appear after the area's enemies are defeated. Clear the arena, then pulse Oni Vision again. Breakable walls that were guarded by enemies become accessible, and hidden containers that were obscured by combat effects become visible. This double-scan habit catches secrets that a single pre-combat scan would miss.
- Track your discovery count. Each area has a fixed number of discoverable elements. The Lady Oni will comment when you've found all secrets in a given area — use her dialogue as a cue that you've been thorough. If she hasn't said anything, there's still something hidden.
- Upgrade early and upgrade fully. Oni Vision upgrades in the Abilities track are the best investment for exploration-focused players. Duration+ and Detection Radius+ compound — each upgrade makes every subsequent scan more effective. The cooldown reduction lets you scan more frequently without waiting, which matters in large areas with many secrets spread across multiple rooms.
Area-by-Area Hidden Path Summary
Each area in the game contains a specific set of hidden paths and secrets. The table below gives you a quick reference for what to look for and how many secrets each area holds.

Summary
Oni Vision transforms how you experience Kyoto. Without it, you're seeing maybe half of what each area offers. With it — and with the right upgrade investment — you'll uncover hidden enemies before they ambush you, discover treasure rooms behind every cracked wall, cross impossible gaps on invisible bridges, and wield Malice threads as devastating environmental weapons. The exploration build (see our Skill Tree Guide) maximizes Oni Vision's duration and detection radius, making it the most powerful tool in your exploration toolkit.
