Kyoto Streets — Prologue / Tutorial
Onimusha: Way of the Sword opens on the streets of Kyoto as Malice begins corrupting the city. This is both the story's introduction and the game's extended tutorial. You play as Miyamoto Musashi before he obtains the Oni Gauntlet, so combat here is basic: light and heavy attacks, dodge, and block. The Lady Oni hasn't bonded with you yet, so there's no soul absorption or Oni Vision.
The streets are linear — follow the path through crumbling buildings and Malice-touched alleyways. You'll encounter your first Genma soldiers here, and the game deliberately uses weak, telegraphed enemies to teach you the basics: watch the wind-up, block, counter. There's no death penalty in the prologue, so treat it as a sandbox for learning timing.
Enemies Encountered
- Genma Soldiers — Basic melee enemies with slow, overhead slashes. Perfect for practicing timed parries.
- Corrupted Villagers — Former townsfolk transformed by Malice. They're aggressive but fragile, dying in one or two hits.
Key Events
The prologue culminates in Musashi's near-death encounter and the bonding with the Oni Gauntlet. After this cutscene, the game opens up. You gain access to soul absorption, Oni Vision, and the full combat system. This is where the real game begins — everything before was warm-up.
Pay close attention during the prologue's combat prompts. The game teaches deflect timing here with visual indicators that disappear afterward. If you master the deflect during the tutorial, the rest of the game's difficulty curve flattens considerably. Don't rush through it — the prologue is your free practice round.
Kiyomizu-dera — Chapter 1
Kiyomizu-dera, the famous Kyoto temple perched on a hillside, is the first major area after obtaining the Oni Gauntlet. The temple grounds are corrupted by Malice — wooden halls warped by demonic growth, stone lanterns flickering with unnatural energy, and Genma patrolling the sacred spaces.
This area introduces the full enemy roster and the game's arena structure. Combat encounters take place in cleared temple courtyards, hallways, and the main stage overlooking Kyoto. The layout is semi-linear: you progress forward but can revisit earlier sections to find missed collectibles.
Enemies
- Genma Soldiers — Return from the prologue but now appear in groups of three to five. Learn to manage multiple enemies by using one-handed stance pressure and repositioning.
- Genma Archers — Ranged enemies positioned on elevated platforms. Use your bow to pick them off, or deflect their arrows back for a one-hit kill. Archers are high priority — their shots interrupt your combos on other enemies.
- Genma Heavy — Large, armored Genma with massive health pools and slow but devastating attacks. Their overhead slam can destroy your posture in one hit if blocked. Use deflects to stagger them, then two-handed punish. These are your first real stamina-management test.
Boss: Genma Commander
The chapter boss is a Genma Commander — a mid-tier boss that introduces the game's boss mechanics: health phases, new moves at thresholds, and soul absorption competition. The Commander uses a massive polearm with wide sweeping attacks and a charging thrust. Its tells are large and generous, making this a forgiving first boss. Deflect the sweeps, dodge the thrusts, and use Oni Armaments when the Commander is staggered after a missed charge.
Collectibles
- Pillar of Earth — Hidden behind a breakable wall in the temple's lower storage room. Use Oni Vision to spot the cracked wall. The Pillar of Earth is one of five collectible Pillars needed to unlock the game's true ending.
The storage room is easy to overlook because it branches off the main path through a narrow corridor. If you reach the boss arena without it, you've gone too far — there's no backtracking after the boss fight until you complete Chapter 2. Use Oni Vision in every new room to avoid missing collectibles.
Yasui Konpiragu — Chapter 2
Yasui Konpiragu is a shrine district that introduces stealth and visibility mechanics. Dense foliage, narrow torii gate corridors, and low-light interiors make this area feel fundamentally different from the open courtyards of Kiyomizu-dera. The Malice here manifests as fog that reduces visibility, and some enemies are invisible until you use Oni Vision to reveal them.
Enemies
- Genma Ninjas — Fast, evasive enemies that dash around the arena and attack from unexpected angles. They have low health but high aggression. Use one-handed stance to match their speed and deflect their dash attacks for easy kills.
- Genma Beasts — Quadrupedal demons that lunge and bite. They're fast on the ground and have a leaping attack that covers significant distance. The tell for the leap is a crouching animation — dodge sideways when you see it.
- Invisible Genma — Enemies that are completely invisible to the naked eye. Oni Vision reveals them as translucent outlines. They attack with the same moveset as standard soldiers but catch unaware players off guard. Pulse Oni Vision at the start of every new arena in this area.
Collectibles
- Pillar of Wind — Located in the shrine's upper bell tower. The path to the tower is behind a locked gate that requires a key found in the shrine's underground passage. The underground passage also contains a significant number of red souls, so explore it thoroughly.
The invisible Genma are the biggest threat in this area because they attack while you're focused on visible enemies. The optimal strategy is to pulse Oni Vision at the start of each arena, kill invisible enemies first (they're usually positioned on the edges of the arena), then handle the visible threats. Invisible Genma drop extra blue souls, making them high-value priority targets.
Underground Laboratory — Chapter 4
The Underground Laboratory is a dramatic tonal shift from the shrine and temple areas. This is an indoor, industrial environment — steel corridors, experimentation chambers, and containment units. The Genma here are not natural demons but experiments created through the fusion of human subjects and demonic energy. The atmosphere is claustrophobic and the encounters are some of the most challenging in the mid-game.
Enemies
- Genma Experiments — Humanoid test subjects with grotesque modifications. Some have enlarged arms for powerful swings, others have attached projectile launchers. Their attack patterns are unpredictable compared to standard Genma because each experiment variant has a unique moveset. Watch the body modifications to predict attack type.
- Genma Turrets — Stationary automated defenses that fire rapid projectile bursts. They can't move but have a wide firing arc. Use the bow to destroy them from a distance, or deflect projectiles back. Turrets are positioned to cover corridors, so you'll often need to deal with them while other enemies advance.
Collectibles
- Pillar of Light — Found in the laboratory's core reactor room, behind a puzzle involving the activation of three power nodes. The puzzle requires you to explore three branching corridors, activate switches in each, then return to the core room. The Pillar of Light appears in the reactor chamber once all three nodes are active.
The turret corridors are the most dangerous sections in this area because turrets pin you down while experiment enemies advance. Clear turrets with the bow before entering the corridor's main section. If you try to fight turrets and experiments simultaneously, you'll burn through health and stamina. One turret arrow plus one experiment heavy attack can kill you from full health on standard difficulty.
Fantasy Realm — Late Game
The Fantasy Realm is the game's late-game area — a surreal, otherworldly dimension where the boundaries between the living world and the demon realm have collapsed entirely. The environment shifts between floating platforms, warped versions of Kyoto landmarks, and abstract geometric spaces. Enemy density is at its highest here, and the game expects you to have mastered all combat systems.
Enemies
All previous enemy types appear in the Fantasy Realm, often in mixed groups that force you to switch stances and tactics rapidly. New elite variants of earlier enemies appear with enhanced speed, damage, and new attacks. The Lady Oni will warn you about the realm's destabilizing effect on the boundary between worlds — and the increased Genma aggression that comes with it.
Collectibles
- Pillar of Spirit — Found on a hidden floating platform accessible only after solving a traversal puzzle involving Malice threads. Use Oni Vision to reveal the invisible path, then platform across to find the Pillar of Spirit on a small island suspended above the void.
- Pillar of Void — The final Pillar, located behind the last major boss of the area. You cannot miss it on a normal playthrough — it sits in the arena after the boss is defeated. Collecting all five Pillars is required for the true ending.
There are five Pillars total: Earth (Kiyomizu-dera), Wind (Yasui Konpiragu), Light (Underground Lab), Spirit (Fantasy Realm hidden), and Void (Fantasy Realm boss arena). All five must be collected before the final boss to unlock the true ending. If you miss any Pillar, you still reach the final boss but get the standard ending.
