What "Mysteries of Kyoto" actually means
If you have seen search traffic for "mysteries of kyoto onimusha" or "wormley ways" (a fan typo that caught on), you are looking for the same thing: a network of optional detours that the game surfaces only through Oni Vision. They are not flagged on the main map. They are not part of any quest log. They are simply there, and a casual first playthrough will skip every single one.
The Mysteries fall into three types: Environment Puzzles (an item gated behind a sequence break), Echoes (lore fragments that boost a soul type), and Stray Oni (mini-boss duels tied to a Rune Sword upgrade path). Each Mystery has exactly one chance per save file.
Chapter 3 โ The Lantern Ascent
After the main story beats at the riverside, take the second left past the lantern vendor instead of the right toward the boss. A hidden corridor opens behind the third lantern (the one with the broken handle). Inside is a Stray Oni โ a Sokushi-type Genma with only one attack pattern, but very high poise. Beat it for a free Level-2 Rune Sword upgrade token.
Bring Onimaru+1 or higher. The Lantern Ascent Genma has 4,200 HP and the fight is short, but the parry window is one frame. Practice the parry on the regular Sokushi patrols outside the corridor first.
Chapter 5 โ The Wormley Ways
The phrase "wormley ways" appears in a few fan walkthroughs and confuses new players. It refers to a small network of switchback paths in the Chapter 5 castle grounds that the map labels "Winding Ways" (not "Wormley"). The label is easy to misread because the kanji is partially obscured by ivy. The right path leads to a hidden shrine, the wrong one drops you into a Genma ambush.
From the Chapter 5 courtyard, go through the broken gate, up the first switchback, then take the second left. Continue past the moss-eaten torii. The shrine is at the back, behind a breakable wall that costs 200 red souls to Issen through. The reward is an Echo fragment that boosts the yellow (veteran) soul drop rate by 5%.
Chapter 7 โ The Quiet Halls
Chapter 7 has the densest cluster of Mysteries. From the main hall, look for a side passage marked by a single lit candle. Three Mysteries branch from there:
- Left: An Environment Puzzle โ three sliding panels hide a chest containing a Level-3 Rune Sword token.
- Right: An Echo fragment (purple soul drop +8%).
- Up: A Stray Oni duel tied to Kaneshige's +4 upgrade path. Skip this one unless you have Kaneshige+3 already; the fight is brutal at lower levels.
Chapter 9 โ Mountain Pass Tower Side Path
The Chapter 9 tower where you pick up Enryuu has a parallel climb on the opposite side. Cross via the rope bridge (instead of the elevator) and you reach a small shrine with a Stray Oni. The duel here is optional but worth it โ the reward is the Enryuu+2 upgrade path, saving you roughly 2,000 red souls.
Chapter 11 โ The Empty Library
The Empty Library sits behind the second save room of Chapter 11. It contains the only Echo that boosts the white (legendary) soul drop rate, and a Stray Oni that drops a Tachibana Yuki+3 token. The puzzle here is a sliding-tile sequence that mirrors a real Heian-period pattern; the solution is in our Chapter 11 walkthrough.
Chapter 13 โ The Hidden Courtyard Return
After Bishamon unlocks (Ch.12), the Chapter 13 courtyard re-opens. Three new Mysteries appear, and the Stray Oni in this section is the only place to farm the dual-color soul used for the true-ending weapon upgrade. Skip it on a first run if you are not committed to the true ending.
How many Mysteries are there total?
24 in NG, 38 in NG+. The NG+ extras are mostly Echoes (no combat), but they unlock a unique title screen reward and an extra dialogue branch in the true ending.
