Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny — All Bosses Guide

Every boss encounter in Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny (2002 PS2 / 2026 Remastered) with attack patterns, elemental weaknesses, recommended weapons, and reward unlocks. Originally the second game in the Onimusha franchise, Onimusha 2 expanded the soul-crafting system and introduced multiple playable characters — Jubei Yagyu, Oyu, and a young Hideyasu Yuki — across a journey to avenge Jubei's father and destroy the Genma lord Nobunaga.

TL;DR Onimusha 2 Bosses at a Glance
  • 8 main bosses across 5 discs, plus the Golden Evil Statue as the true final boss
  • Most bosses have 2-3 phases — phases typically trigger at 50% HP and again at 25% HP
  • Recommended weapon element rotates between Lightning / Wind / Fire / Earth — match your currently equipped Oni Gauntlet's element for the +50% damage bonus
  • The Eight Secret Necklaces are required to face Nobunaga's True Form — collect them all to unlock the best ending
  • Two characters you didn't expect can be unlocked mid-game: Oyu (Disc 3) and a young Hideyasu Yuki (Disc 4)

Ginghamphatts — Disc 1

The first major boss in Onimusha 2 and a tutorial in disguise. Ginghamphatts is a giant Genma who wields a massive club and lumbering area attacks. He'll start to look terrifying, but the fight is intentionally generous to teach new players how to use the Oni Gauntlet's soul system and basic blocking.

Attack Pattern

💡 Beginner Tip

Save your enhanced souls for this fight. If you absorbed any Tier-2 Wind souls earlier, combine them at the Pause Menu into a Wind Orb and enchant your spear before the boss door.

Gogandantess — Disc 1

The second Disc 1 boss — Gogandantess is a sword-wielding dual-form Genma who telegraphs his transitions with a dramatic pose change. This fight teaches players to read visual cues rather than animation.

AttributeDetail
Disc1 (Goda Village Ruins)
Recommended LevelJubei Level 5-7
Elemental WeaknessLightning
Recommended WeaponKatana (faster parry recovery)
Phases3 (transitions triggered by HP and a mid-fight cutscene)
RewardAuthority of the Warrior Statue + 1,200 souls

Phase Breakdown

Phase 1 (Human Form): Gogandantess starts in a humanoid form wielding a katana. His attacks are telegraphed with a clear wind-up. Block early, counterattack with 2-3 hits, retreat.

Phase 2 (Genma Form): At ~60% HP, he transforms into a larger Genma form. New attacks include a projectile slash and a 3-hit combo. He is now vulnerable to Lightning damage — switch to your Lightning-enchanted katana.

Phase 3 (Berserk): At ~25% HP, the screen tints red and his attack speed doubles. This phase is short (under 90 seconds) — play defensively and only counter after a clearly-blocked swing.

Ginghamphatts II — Disc 2

The first major difficulty spike. Ginghamphatts returns with an expanded moveset, including a ground-slam AoE that hits the entire arena if you don't escape. He also gains a temporary invulnerability shield at the start of the fight until you destroy the four soul lanterns in the corners.

Recommended LevelJubei Level 10-12
Elemental WeaknessWind + Fire (alternates)
Recommended WeaponTwin Swords for fast elemental cycling
Phases3
RewardAuthority of the King Statue (Enhanced) + 2,500 souls

New Mechanics

Jujudormah — Disc 2

One of the most memorable boss fights in Onimusha 2. Jujudormah is a multi-stage encounter: first as a sword-and-magic Genma, then as a flying insectoid that hangs from the ceiling. She also drops one of the Eight Secret Necklaces needed for the true ending.

AttributeDetail
Disc2 (Underground Temple)
Recommended LevelJubei Level 12-14
Elemental WeaknessLightning (Phase 1), Earth (Phase 2)
Recommended WeaponSpear (long reach for ceiling phase)
Phases2
RewardFirst Secret Necklace + 3,000 souls

Phase 1 Strategy (Ground Combat)

Jujudormah telegraphs magic attacks with a "Heh!" voice line — block immediately when you hear it. Her melee combo is a 5-hit string: side-step the third hit (which has the longest recovery) and punish. Lightning enchant your weapon for the +50% damage bonus.

Phase 2 Strategy (Ceiling Combat)

At 50% HP, she detaches her lower body and clings to the ceiling. She drops down for dive attacks — run sideways to dodge, then counter with a spear thrust while she's recovering. Earth element is now her weakness (the floor-based attacks trigger Earth vulnerability windows).

Gogandantess II — Disc 3

The second iteration of the warrior Genma, now with full mastery of the elements. This fight tests whether you've been upgrading multiple weapons — switching elements mid-fight is the only way to win.

AttributeDetail
Disc3 (Setagaya Castle)
Recommended LevelJubei / Oyu Level 15-18
Elemental WeaknessCycles: Wind → Lightning → Fire → Earth (matches your equipped element weakness)
Recommended WeaponCarry all 4 upgraded weapons in inventory
Phases4
RewardAuthority of the Warrior Statue (Enhanced) + 5,000 souls

Elemental Cycle Mechanic

Every 60 seconds, Gogandantess shifts the arena's dominant element. The on-screen color tint changes (green → yellow → red → blue) and his attacks of that element deal +50% damage to you. Match your weapon's element to the current dominant — open the Pause Menu mid-fight to swap equipped Gauntlet.

Gogandantess III — Disc 4

The final form of the warrior Genma, now a recurring rival across the entire game. Gogandantess III combines all of his previous movesets with a new "Final Onimusha" transformation at 30% HP.

AttributeDetail
Disc4 (Antarctic Genma Base)
Recommended LevelJubei / Hideyasu Level 20+
Elemental WeaknessAll elements equally weak at 30% HP
Recommended WeaponYour strongest upgraded weapon
Phases3 (with transformation cutscene)
RewardSoul of Gogandantess (crafting material) + 8,000 souls

Soul Absorber — Disc 4

The mid-disc mini-boss that punishes players who haven't been soul-crafting. The Soul Absorber is a massive floating Genma that drains your souls mid-fight — every soul orb on the ground is contested.

AttributeDetail
Disc4 (Genma Labs)
Recommended LevelLevel 18+
Elemental WeaknessFire
Recommended WeaponTwin Swords (fast soul-stealing counterplay)
Phases2
RewardSoul Absorber Heart (crafting material) + 4,000 souls

Strategy

The Soul Absorber creates dark orbs that follow you — kill them quickly with light attacks before they reach you, or they detonate for 50 HP damage. Stay near dropped soul orbs and absorb them instantly with the Gauntlet; don't let them sit on the ground for the boss to steal.

Ginghamphatts III — Disc 5

The final evolution of the lumbering club Genma. Ginghamphatts III combines all three previous forms with a new charge-and-slam combo that covers half the arena.

AttributeDetail
Disc5 (Dark Capital — Final Approach)
Recommended LevelLevel 25+
Elemental WeaknessWind (strongest), Lightning (secondary)
Recommended WeaponSpear + Wind enchantment
Phases3
RewardGinghamphatts Soul (crafting material) + 10,000 souls

Nobunaga — Disc 5 (Mid-Boss)

The first encounter with the game's main antagonist. Nobunaga wields twin swords and can fly — this fight has the most vertical combat in the entire game.

AttributeDetail
Disc5 (Demon Capital Throne)
Recommended LevelLevel 25+
Elemental WeaknessEarth (when grounded), Lightning (when flying)
Recommended WeaponTwin Swords (fast recovery for aerial punish windows)
Phases3 (ground / aerial / berserk)
RewardNobunaga's Gauntlet Upgrade + 12,000 souls

Strategy

When Nobunaga lands, you have a 3-second punish window before he ascends again. Save your strongest combo for these moments. In the aerial phase, equip Lightning-enchanted ranged souls and fire them when he hovers above the throne.

Golden Evil Statue — True Final Boss

The Golden Evil Statue is the true final boss and is unlocked only if you collect all 8 Secret Necklaces before defeating Nobunaga. This is a pure DPS check + pattern recognition fight — no upgrades help, only skill.

AttributeDetail
DiscPost-game (True Onimusha Form)
Recommended LevelFully upgraded Jubei
Elemental WeaknessNone — pure physical damage
Recommended WeaponYour strongest fully-upgraded weapon
Phases5 (cutscenes between each)
RewardTrue Ending Cutscene + 50,000 souls

Phase Breakdown

The fight takes place entirely in Jubei's True Onimusha form — your entire arsenal is the arm-cannon. The Statue has five glowing weak points (head, chest, both arms, base). Each phase exposes a new weak point as the others regenerate. Cycle your fire between the exposed points to maximize DPS, and use the slam-dash when the Statue charges its area blast.

Surviving all five phases unlocks the "Mother of All Revenges" trophy/achievement — see our Onimusha 2 Trophy Guide for the complete checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to play Onimusha: Warlords before Onimusha 2?

Not strictly required — Onimusha 2 has a self-contained story following Jubei Yagyu. However, you'll appreciate the Genma lore, the soul system, and Nobunaga's role much more with Warlords context. If you're short on time, the Onimusha 2 vs Warlords comparison helps prioritize.

What's the easiest boss to farm souls from?

Ginghamphatts III on Disc 5 is the fastest soul farm — he has low HP, predictable patterns, and drops 10,000 souls per kill. Equip a soul-boosting talisman (found in the Genma Labs) and you can earn 20,000 souls per minute. Use this to max out all weapon upgrades before fighting the Golden Statue.

Are there any missable bosses or secret encounters?

Two bosses are technically missable if you progress too quickly. Oyu joins your party in Disc 3 only if you've collected the Authority of the Warrior Statue before entering Setagaya Castle. Hideyasu Yuki joins in Disc 4 only if you complete the Genma Labs side mission (talk to the NPC in the Disc 3 hub before the boss). Both characters have unique boss fights in their storylines that you can't replay.

Does the 2026 Remastered version change any boss fights?

The remastered version (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC) added modernized controls (true analog movement) but did not change boss HP, attack patterns, or rewards. The optional Caravan Mode adds a wave-based boss rush where you fight all 8 main bosses back-to-back with limited healing — recommended for experienced players seeking a challenge.

What's the best weapon to use against every boss?

For the entire game, a fully upgraded spear with Wind enchantment is the safest choice — it has the longest attack range (keeps you out of melee punish windows), and Wind is the most common boss weakness. For aerial fights like Nobunaga, swap to a fully upgraded twin sword with Lightning enchantment.

⚠️ 2026 Remaster Note

This guide is verified against the original PS2 release and the 2026 Remastered version. Some weapon attack-speed values may differ slightly in the Remastered version due to frame-rate adjustments, but boss HP and patterns are identical.
