Quick answer: Save before every chapter, fund Oni Gauntlet tiers 1–3 with yellow souls only, equip Tachibana Yuki as off-hand once you have it, and never spend white souls on anything but Bishamon. Below: the other 46 tips.
Combat and parry (1–10)
- The parry window in Way of the Sword is 6 frames at base. Tier 3 talent pushes it to 12. If you are missing parries, the issue is the talent, not your timing.
- Issen cancels parry. Use this to chain two parries into a one-hit kill on a staggered Genma.
- Hold heavy attack after a successful parry for a guaranteed stagger on Sokushi-type Genma.
- The blue flash on an incoming attack is a 3-frame tell. The orange flash is a 1-frame tell — those are the unblockables, dodge not parry.
- Your off-hand weapon's level-1 Oni Art is free. Use it to bait patterns before committing the heavy hitter.
- Sokushi-type Genma always do a 3-hit combo then a recovery window. Don't parry the third hit — dodge and punish.
- Genma-archers fire 5 shots in a 6-second window. The 6th second is your punish window. Don't try to parry arrows.
- Heavy attack combos are 4 hits; the 4th hit launches anything below 800 poise. Cancel after 3 if the target has high poise.
- Backstep has 12 frames of invulnerability. Cheap but consistent.
- Oni Vision drains yellow souls at 1 per second. Don't keep it on for exploration — only for fights.
Soul economy (11–20)
- White souls only drop from the dual-color soul node (Soul branch tier 5) and the Chapter 11 boss. Save them exclusively for Bishamon upgrades.
- Yellow souls cap at 9,999 per area. The Chapter 6 Genma arena is the only place with no cap — it scales with time spent.
- Equipping Tachibana Yuki as off-hand gives 1.5× red souls at base, 1.7× at Yuki+1, 2.0× at Yuki+2. Always equip it before farming.
- Purple souls are only used for the purple passive tree. The +8% drop rate node pays for itself in 30 minutes of farming.
- Soul Siphon (Soul branch tier 4) is the single best economic talent. Unlock it as soon as you cross into tier 4.
- Don't sell the demon-forged items you find in chests. They are the only source of the dual-color soul material.
- The Chapter 6 arena's longest efficient run is 8 minutes. Past 8 minutes the Genma spawn rate drops and you lose time.
- Red soul drops are not affected by NG+ difficulty. The cap is the cap.
- Yellow souls reset on death. The 12-frame parry window is a death-prevention mechanic, not just a damage perk.
- Souls dropped by a boss are banked even if you die to the next encounter. Spend them at the next save room.
Oni Gauntlet shortcuts (21–30)
- Tier 1–3 is linear. There is no reason not to max it before Chapter 4 — the cost is 4,500 yellow souls, earnable in 90 minutes.
- Tier 4 is the branch point. The cost of changing branches after tier 4 is a 1.4× multiplier on every subsequent node.
- The Soul branch has a hidden node at tier 6 that unlocks the dual-color soul material. Plan for it if you want Bishamon.
- The Parry branch capstone (tier 7) extends the parry window to 18 frames. Builds trivial but very safe.
- The Issen branch capstone (tier 7) chains a 5-hit Issen on a fully staggered target. Highest single-target burst in the game.
- You can mix branches, but every cross is a 1.4× cost. Two cross-overs doubles the cost of everything past tier 4.
- Nodes in tiers 1–3 can be unlocked in any order. Tiers 4–7 must be unlocked in branch sequence.
- Some nodes are gated behind specific weapons (e.g. Kaneshige's level-3 node). They don't appear in the tree until the weapon is in your inventory.
- The Oni Gauntlet does not have a respec. Plan your tier 4 branch before you spend a single yellow soul on it.
- Gauntlet nodes are saved per-weapon, not per-character. NG+ resets them but keeps the per-weapon unlock flags.
Save and missables (31–40)
- Save before every chapter. The autosave is only at the start of each chapter, not at save rooms.
- Save before the Chapter 12 courtyard. Bishamon is missable in NG.
- Save before the Chapter 9 Mountain Pass Tower. The 90-second timer punishes experimentation.
- Save before the Chapter 6 Floating Pagoda. The breakable wall is one-way.
- The 24 Mysteries of Kyoto are not in any quest log. Track them yourself or use our checklist.
- Echo fragments (Mysteries) are one-time per save. NG+ re-spawns them but the rewards don't re-stack.
- The Chapter 7 triple Mystery branch is the only one with three Mysteries in one room. Don't skip it.
- Save before the Chapter 11 Empty Library. The sliding-tile puzzle has no in-game hint.
- Save before the Chapter 13 courtyard. The Stray Oni there drops the only farming soul for Bishamon+5.
- The Chapter 5 "Wormley Ways" (Winding Ways) detour is a one-way drop. If you fall into the Genma ambush, you can't re-enter the shrine.
Exploration and progression (41–50)
- Map fragments are 1 per chapter. They reveal 30% of the chapter map. Collect them all before leaving a chapter.
- The Chapter 4 hidden door behind the third lantern is the easiest skip. If you don't have Onimaru+1, skip it.
- The Chapter 9 elevator is faster than the rope bridge, but the rope bridge is the only way to the Stray Oni shrine.
- Oni Vision reveals Sokushi-type Genma through walls. Use it sparingly — it costs yellow souls per second.
- Breakable walls glow blue with Oni Vision. The cost to Issen through is 200 red souls per wall. Don't blow them all in Chapter 3.
- Chapter 8 has no Mysteries. Don't waste time looking — it is the only such chapter.
- The final boss arena has a 30-second parry-tutorial cutscene. You can skip it but you lose the first 5 seconds of buff uptime.
- NG+ unlocks a sixth branch in the Oni Gauntlet (Demon). It costs 1.4× and is gated behind the Bishamon trophy.
- The true ending requires Bishamon+3 or higher at the final boss, AND the Chapter 13 Stray Oni defeated. Both, not either.
- You can swap weapons in the pause menu at any save room. Use this to pre-stage your loadout for the next chapter.
FAQ
Which single tip has the biggest impact?
#5: equip Tachibana Yuki as off-hand once you have it. The Soul Siphon passive is the single best economic talent in the game and costs you nothing.
Are these tips applicable to NG+?
Most are. The differences: Gauntlet costs are 1.4×, Bishamon starts at base, and a sixth branch unlocks (Demon).
