1. First Playthrough Build (Action Difficulty)

The recommended first run plays on Action difficulty to learn the parry/Issen loop without the one-shot combos that Action/Carnage later demand. The Charm priority below gives you the most survivability for the least souls spent, then layers on damage late.

Recommended First-Run Charms

Charm of the Healer boosts healing effectiveness — your most reliable sustain. Charm of Protection reduces health lost on hit, padding every mistake. Fencer's Strength Charm boosts regular attack power so even your bread-and-butter combo lands harder. Keep the Default Hozuki Pouch and only swap in Charm of Awakening once it unlocks mid-game.

Investment: ~50,000 Red Souls + 50,000 Favor Playthrough: 1 (Action) Difficulty: Action

Why these three Charms?

Each Charm solves a different survivability problem. The Healer increases the value of every Hozuki Pouch use (including free autos). Protection is the cheapest HP-buffer in the game. Fencer's Strength scales every combo into a meaningful damage source. Together they form a low-investment build that still clears the entire main story on Action difficulty.

2. NG+ Build (Carnage — First Attempt)

On your first attempt at Carnage, you carry your maxed Charms + Hozuki Pouches from your Action clear. The NG+ build adds the Oni-mode Charms because Carnage fights demand transformation damage windows you simply don't get on lower difficulties.

NG+ Carnage Charms

Charm of Awakening (faster Awakening gauge fill) and Charm of Oni Power (faster Oni Power gauge fill) are the two Charms that turn Carnage from a stat-check into a timing-check. Pair with Fencer's Strength for combo damage, max the Default Hozuki Pouch for emergency recovery, and bank a stack of Heavy Restorative consumables for every major boss door.

Investment: ~135,000 Red Souls + 150,000 Favor (all 15 Charms) Playthrough: NG+ Difficulty: Carnage

3. Minamoto no Yoshitsune Final-Boss Build (Carnage-Specific)

The final boss is the only Carnage fight where you must pre-stage six consumables before the door. The build below is identical to the standard NG+ build, but you also bank a specific consumable loadout — the boss's Phase 2 ground AoE alone forces at least one Heavy Restorative use.

Final Boss Consumable Stack
  • Heavy Restorative — full HP heal. Phase 2 ground AoE can chunk you.
  • Amulet of Introspection — restores Issen gauge for Break Issen chains.
  • Stimulants — short damage window. Burn on Phase 3 burst.
  • Sun-Dried Hozuki — top-tier healing. Phase 1 entry safety.
  • Greater Defense Talisman — damage reduction during enhanced state.
  • Greater Might Talisman — pair with Stimulants for max burst.
Charms: Same as NG+ base build Consumables: 6 mandatory + buffer Phase Plan: Save Awakening for Phase 3

4. Challenge Run Variants

Once you've cleared the game on Carnage, the challenge variants are how you stretch your build. Each restricts your toolset and forces a specific skill path.

Issen-Only Build
Forbid all regular attacks. Focus Reflex Combo Power and Chain Issen Reach so every successful Issen clears an entire room. Boss fights become Issen timing puzzles.
Parry-Only Build
Stack Parry Window+ and Parry Window++ to maximum. No offensive skills, just perfect deflect timing. Bosses are beaten entirely on Break Issen openings.
Oni Awakening Build
Heavy investment in Charm of Awakening and Charm of Oni Power. Spend almost every encounter in transformed state. Slow but extremely safe.
Unarmed Build (Oni Gauntlet)
Pure Oni Gauntlet damage. No katanas. Stack Oni Power and use Gauntlet heavies exclusively. Slowest clear but the most stylish.

5. Skill Tree Priority Order

The skill tree budget is finite — 53 Power Stones for combat upgrades and 54 Oni Stones for Oni-mode unlocks. Spending them in the wrong order is the most common reason players hit a wall on Carnage.

Tier Skill Effect Why this tier
Tier 1 — Mandatory Foundation
1 Health Pool I +15% Max HP Cheapest universal defensive upgrade.
Tier 2 — Defensive + Offensive Core
2 Parry Window+ +20% parry window Foundation of all combat — easier Deflect and Parry.
2 Issen Mastery +15% perfect Issen damage Maximum single-hit damage potential.
2 Rapid Charge Faster heavy attack charge Versatile utility — utility for stance control.
Tier 3 — Max Build Extensions
3 Health Pool II +15% Max HP Stacks with Tier 1 HP buffer.
3 Parry Window++ Further +20% parry window Forgiving parry on Carnage.
3 Issen Mastery II +15% more Issen damage Boss-killing burst.

6. Charm Priority Order (Resource Efficiency)

Each Charm upgrade tier costs 3,000 RS + 3,500 Favor (Level 2) and 6,000 RS + 6,500 Favor (Level 3). The order below gives the most defensive value for the least souls spent first, then layers on damage and Oni-mode upgrades.

Recommended Upgrade Order
1Charm of Protection — best HP-buffer value early.
2Charm of the Healer — multiplies every Hozuki use.
3Fencer's Strength Charm — combo damage scales late game.
4Charm of Awakening — required for Issen-heavy play.
5Charm of Oni Power — unlocks Oni Gauntlet burst.
6Situational Charms (Dexterity, Enticement) — fill remaining budget.

7. Common Build Mistakes

Spending Oni Stones Too Early

Oni Stones unlock Oni-mode abilities, but you only get 54 of them. Burning them on cosmetic upgrades before maxing your core combat skill path means you'll hit a hard wall against the late-game bosses. Reserve them for Oni Awakening + Charm Capacity upgrades only.

Forgetting to Max Hozuki Pouch

The Default Hozuki Pouch is the single most important equipment upgrade for Carnage. Without it maxed, you can't survive the multi-phase boss fights where Action Prompts are disabled and one mistake costs 70% of your HP.

Forgetting to Equip Upgraded Charms

Upgrading a Charm and then forgetting to slot it into your active build is a known new-player trap. Charm slots are limited — verify your equipped Charms match your build sheet before every boss.

8. Build Philosophy Summary

Every successful build in Onimusha: Way of the Sword follows the same three rules. First, spend your souls on defense before damage. Second, keep your build aligned with the difficulty tier — Carnage fights demand different Charms than Action fights. Third, pair the upgrade sweep with the manual save-reload trick so you never run out of currency mid-build.
