After the Dokyo fight in the Oni Refuge and before the major arc starting with Chapter 9's "Windswept Kennin-ji," Musashi takes a short journey to a Hozuki merchant to repair and upgrade his healing pouch. The chapter is short, the combat is light, and the merchant dialogue hints at the larger conflict still to come. Use this chapter to stock up on supplies and review your skill tree before the next major arc.

3. Walkthrough
Section 1 — Navigate to Merchant
The path from the Oni Refuge exit to the merchant is linear, with 2–3 Genma enemies along the way.
- Exit the Oni Refuge via the rift portal you entered.
- Follow the merchant path east, past the dojo.
- Clear the 2–3 Genma Brutes that spawn along the path — use this as a chance to practice your skills learned in Chapter 7 (Soul Core Power 2 is particularly effective here).
- The merchant's stall is marked by a red awning and a Hozuki banner.
Section 2 — Merchant Interaction
The Hozuki merchant is a returning character from earlier in the game. This is the first time you can interact with the merchant's full inventory.
- Optional extended dialogue: ask the merchant about the pouch mechanics, the Kyoto corruption, and the Oni Clan. The dialogue hints at the Dokyo storyline continuing in later chapters.
- Upgrade the Hozuki Pouch immediately: the merchant offers a level 2 upgrade (capacity 5 → 8) for 1000 souls, or a level 3 upgrade (capacity 8 → 12, faster heal) for 2500 souls.
- The pouch is your primary healing resource. With 9 Hozuki Pouches total to find in the game (Retrogems), the merchant's upgrades are essential for late-game content.
Buy the level 3 upgrade if you have the souls. The 12-slot capacity matters more than the heal speed in the late-game chapters where bosses hit for 40%+ HP per swing. If you're low on souls, the level 2 upgrade is still a meaningful improvement.
Section 3 — Brief Combat
After the merchant interaction, 4 Genma Brutes ambush the path back. This is the chapter's only real combat section.
- 4 Genma Brutes spawn in two waves (2 + 2) on the merchant path.
- Practice the skills learned in Chapter 7 — Soul Core Power 2 cleans up groups, Oni Gauntlet slam staggers elites.
- The fight is scripted — once you defeat all 4, the chapter ends with a cutscene.
