Souls are the currency of progression in Onimusha. You use them to upgrade weapons, increase stats, and unlock abilities. Knowing how to farm them and what to spend them on makes the game much easier.

This guide covers everything about souls, upgrades, and progression.

What Are Souls?

Souls are the essence of defeated enemies. You absorb them automatically when you kill enemies.

Types of Souls

• Red Souls: The most common. Used for weapon upgrades and general progression.
• Blue Souls: Restore your magic/Oni gauge. Absorb them during combat.
• Yellow Souls: Restore health. Rare but very useful.
• Purple Souls: Rare, give permanent upgrades or large amounts of red souls.

Best Ways to Farm Souls

Need more souls? These are the best methods:

Early Game Farming

• Replay the first village area
• Fight the respawning enemies near the first save point
• Break every object for bonus souls

Mid Game Farming

• The temple courtyard has respawning enemies
• Arena challenges give lots of souls
• Side quests reward soul bundles

Late Game Farming

• The final dungeon has lots of strong enemies
• Secret arena mode is the best soul farming in the game
• New Game+ multiplies soul gains

Soul Farming Tips

• Use Oni form liberally. More kills = more souls.
• Chain kills. Killing enemies quickly in succession gives bonus souls.
• Break everything. Objects often contain small soul amounts.
• Fight everything. Do not run from enemies if you need souls.

Weapon Upgrades

Upgrading your weapon is the most important thing you can do.

What Weapon Upgrades Do

• Increase base damage
• Add new combo attacks
• Add elemental damage (at higher levels)
• Improve attack speed (some weapons)

Upgrade Cost Scaling

Each upgrade level costs more than the last:

• Level 1 to 2: Cheap
• Level 2 to 3: Moderate
• Level 3 to 4: Expensive
• Level 4 to 5 (max): Very expensive

Upgrade Priority Order

What to spend souls on, in order of importance:

1. Main weapon damage upgrades. This is number one by a huge margin.
2. Health increases. More HP means more room for mistakes.
3. Oni gauge capacity. Longer Oni form = more damage.
4. Secondary weapon (one only). An elemental weapon for resistant enemies.
5. Defense upgrades. Nice but not as impactful as offense.
6. Item capacity upgrades. Low priority. You can manage inventory.

Stat Upgrades Explained

Attack Power

Increases all damage you deal. The most important stat. Upgrade your weapon to increase this.

Defense

Reduces damage you take. Useful but not as impactful as attack. You can get defense from armor and accessories too.

Health

Increases your max HP. Very important for surviving boss attacks. Upgrade using special items or at save points.

Oni Gauge

Larger gauge means longer Oni form. Very powerful when upgraded to max.

Best Practices

• Focus on one weapon first. A max-level weapon beats multiple mid-level weapons every time.
• Do not spread yourself thin. Pick your main weapon and max it before upgrading others.
• Upgrade health at milestones. Before major bosses, get a health upgrade if you can afford it.
• Keep some souls in reserve. You never know when you will need to repair or upgrade something suddenly.
• Explore thoroughly. Hidden chests often have upgrade materials and soul bundles.

New Game+ lets you carry over your upgrades and continue getting stronger.

• Higher upgrade tiers become available
• Ultimate weapons can be obtained
