- Sasaki Ganryu is the game's true first boss. He is a rival swordsman who weaves around the arena combining quick piercing strikes with slower wave-like delayed attacks.
- Every attack is clearly telegraphed — even the delayed ones.
- Difficulty: 3.5/10 on Carnage — a fair but engaging first test.

1. Boss Overview
Sasaki Ganryu is the rival swordsman of Onimusha: Way of the Sword — a Genma-adjacent warrior whose style sits between Byakue's lumbering brute force and Dohatsu-Ten's disciplined katana. PowerPyx calls him the game's true first boss in the Carnage Boss Rematch list, because Sasaki is the first fight that genuinely demands you master every defensive verb the tutorial taught you.
He doesn't brute force his way through you. He weaves — circling the arena, finding angles, mixing fast and slow attacks so you can never quite settle into a single rhythm. The good news: every move is clearly telegraphed, and the delayed attacks are equally readable once you stop panic-rolling.
Note on Sasaki Ganryu Altered
This page covers base Sasaki (3.5/10). His altered form — Sasaki Ganryu Altered — is rated 7/10 on Carnage, the second-toughest boss in the rematch. He returns with the companion Oni Gioh, faster attacks, and a Phase 2 that can OHKO. See the Altered page for the full break-down (coming soon).
2. Attack Patterns
| Phase | Attack | Tell | Counter |
|---|---|---|---|
| P1 | Quick Piercing Strikes | Lightning-fast lunges, blade forward | Deflect on contact; chain into Issen |
| P1 | Slow Delayed Strike (Wave) | Hesitates, draws katana wide, then releases in a wave-like pattern | Wait for the actual swing — patience is the entire trick |
| P1 | Weave Around Arena | Circles you between strikes | Camera adjust — don't lock on too tightly |
| P1 | Leap Stomp | Jumps and slams the ground | Dodge (sidestep) or shut down with Issen |
| P1 | Left Hand Grab (Blue) | Reaches out with empty left hand | Press parry right before his hand connects |
3. Strategy — Phase 1
Sasaki's Phase 1 is the cleanest introduction to fighting a human-shaped opponent. His attacks fall into two camps:
- Quick piercing strikes. These are fast but cleanly telegraphed. Hold block (LB) and tap A on impact for a deflect, then immediately Issen on the recovery.
- Slower delayed (wave-like) strikes. These look like they're about to fire at any moment, but they don't. Wait until the swing actually commits before deflecting — this is the single most common mistake new players make.
- Don't button mash. His delayed attacks specifically punish aggression. You will eat a wave to the face if you swing before he does.
- Leap Stomp. Either sidestep or pre-empt with an Issen if you read the jump.
- Left Hand Grab (Blue). Wait until the hand is about to grab you, then press parry. The grab is fast and unforgiving but very telegraphed once you know the cue.
Once you internalize "wait for the swing, then deflect", Sasaki's Phase 1 plays itself. He is rated 3.5/10 specifically because his delays teach the same patience the late-game bosses will punish the lack of.
4. Recommended Build (1st Playthrough)
Action Difficulty Starter Build
Same standard 1st-playthrough build as Byakue. Sasaki does not require any elemental advantage or specific charm loadout. Focus on patience and clean deflect timing.
5. Rewards
Defeating Sasaki Ganryu grants:
- Souls — yellow soul payout (varies by difficulty).
- Sasaki's Katana — unique katana with its own stance.
- Progress unlock — story progression.
Exact reward values to be added once the in-game reward popups have been confirmed at patch 1.0.
6. Common Mistakes
- Impatient deflects on delayed attacks. Watch the entire wind-up. The strike will come — just wait.
- Button mashing combos. Sasaki's quick pierces are designed to counter-attack greedy players.
- Ignoring the weave. He circles you constantly. Stay camera-loose so you can read both the front and the back-side attacks.
- Sprinting after him. The arena is large. Hold position and let him come to you.
