This page is a structural skeleton prepared before launch. The estimated time, puzzle sequence, Oni Gauntlet unlock detail, and Sasaki Ganryu boss data are working placeholders that will be verified against the full game on September 4, 2026. Any value labelled "To be verified" should not be treated as final until our team clears the chapter in the launch build.
Chapter 3 is the first true boss chapter. Solve the temple's opening puzzle, unlock the Oni Gauntlet weapon, and face Sasaki Ganryu at the first ancient seal — Parry Difficulty: Hard.
1. Chapter Overview
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Chapter | 3 — "The First Seal" |
| Setting | Mountain temple & first ancient seal chamber |
| Estimated Time | 2.5 – 3 hours |
| Difficulty | Medium |
| Story Summary | Reach the first ancient seal, encounter the first real boss, unlock the Oni Gauntlet weapon |
| New Mechanics Introduced | First major puzzle, Oni Gauntlet weapon system |
| Recommended Level | TBD (based on Chapter 1–2 progression) |
Chapter 3 is the first major dungeon and the first true boss encounter. After crossing the mountain temple's outer wardens, the player solves the chapter's introductory puzzle, unlocks the Oni Gauntlet weapon, and proceeds to the first ancient seal chamber. There, the duelist Sasaki Ganryu — Parry Difficulty Hard — closes out the chapter in a duel that tests the player's mastery of tier-2 timed parries.
Because Ganryu's parry windows are tight, we strongly recommend the Rapid Charge skill unlock granted earlier in the chapter to maximize punish windows between his commitment strings. The chapter also features a secret rooftop mini-boss — a hidden encounter that gates a rare drop — see the Missables section.
2. Main Objectives
- Enter the mountain temple — Begins with a cinematic gateway sequence. The protagonist crosses the temple threshold; story flags update.
- Solve the first major puzzle — A multi-stage temple puzzle gating the inner sanctum. Detailed solution to be added at launch.
- Unlock the Oni Gauntlet weapon — Granted after the puzzle completion. Replaces or augments the Onimaru's primary input layer.
- Reach the first seal chamber — Long vertical climb through the inner temple. Multiple shrine checkpoints.
- Boss battle at the seal — Sasaki Ganryu duel. Defeat unlocks the chapter-end story transition.
Don't skip the temple basement — the Shrine in the temple basement is a recovery save point that significantly softens the climb to the Sasaki Ganryu fight. If you find it on the way up, the descent doesn't matter; but if you miss it, you lose its checkpoint advantage for the boss arena approach.
3. Walkthrough
The walkthrough below is a placeholder step sequence. The exact routing, puzzle order, and enemy placements will be re-verified at launch. Treat each labelled step as a chapter beat rather than a strict room-by-room path.
Detailed Walkthrough — To be verified at launch
Room-by-room routing, puzzle solution steps, exact enemy spawn tables, and item pickup order will be added after we clear Chapter 3 in the full release.
Chapter Beats (Pre-Release Outline)
- Temple Approach — Outer Wardens: Group of elite Genma guards guarding the temple entrance. Best soul-farming spot in the chapter.
- Temple Antechamber — First Puzzle: Multi-stage puzzle gating the inner sanctum. Detail of switches, plates, and timer phases TBD.
- Inner Sanctum — Oni Gauntlet Unlock: Cutscene triggers the weapon unlock. New combat inputs available from this point.
- Temple Climb — Vertical Ascent: Shrine checkpoint at the bottom (see Missables for the basement location); multiple rest points on the way up.
- Rooftop Branch — Secret Mini-Boss: Optional hidden encounter with a rare-drop mini-boss. Optional but high-value.
- Seal Chamber Approach — Last Corridor: Pre-boss gauntlet. Tests both parry chains and the Oni Gauntlet's new mechanics.
- First Seal Chamber — Sasaki Ganryu: Closed boss arena. Defeat to complete the chapter's main combat.
4. Boss Fight — Sasaki Ganryu (First Major Boss)
Sasaki Ganryu
Sasaki Ganryu is the first major boss of Onimusha: Way of the Sword — a human swordsman whose aggressive katana techniques and unrelenting combo pressure demands precise tier-2 timed parries. He represents a duelist archetype, a human-level threat whose mastery of the blade rivals the protagonist's own. His danger lies in speed, combo chains, and the sheer volume of attacks that demand flawless defensive play.
The full frame-accurate parry and Issen breakdown — including the recommended parry tier per attack and the optimal punish windows — lives on the dedicated boss entity page.
For general parry timing theory that applies to Ganryu, see our Combat System Mastery guide. For the Issen counter system, see Issen & Break Issen. Sasaki Ganryu-specific data — exact attack names, parry tier recommendations, and reward table — will be filled in on the entity page at launch.
Sasaki Ganryu Attack Patterns & Parry Windows — To be verified at launch
Frame-accurate attack tells, optimal parry tier per attack, and Issen inputs will be documented once the fight is cleared in the launch build.
5. Key Items & Collectibles
The table below lists the items expected to appear in Chapter 3 based on the demo build and pre-release preview material. Final placement and exact pickup order will be verified at launch.
| Item | Type | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oni Gauntlet | Weapon unlock | Inner Sanctum, after puzzle completion | New weapon class. Detailed input layer and stats TBD. |
| First Seal Key | Key item | Seal chamber — pre-boss corridor | Required to unlock the boss arena transition. |
| Rapid Charge skill unlock | Skill | Granted after the puzzle completion | Improves stance-switch punishment windows — strong vs. Ganryu. |
| Rare drop (Rooftop Mini-Boss) | Material / Talisman | Secret rooftop branch | Hidden encounter with rare-drop reward — see Missables. |
| Soul Cache #3 | Collectible | Temple interior — exact location TBD | One of multiple Soul Caches in the chapter. |
| Additional collectibles | TBD | TBD | Additional items will be added at launch. |
6. Missables
Chapter 3 contains two flagged missables — a secret rooftop mini-boss and a basement shrine checkpoint — both of which have story-state flags that close once the player advances too far. Back up your save before crossing the seal chamber threshold.
- Secret rooftop mini-boss — A hidden encounter with a rare-drop reward. The rooftop access requires a specific jump/climb at the temple climb section. Missing this encounter locks the rare drop for the remainder of the playthrough.
- Shrine in temple basement — A save/checkpoint shrine located in the temple basement. While not strictly a story missable, missing it removes a checkpoint anchor that significantly softens the climb to the Sasaki Ganryu fight.
- Soul Cache #3 (optional) — Falls into the same flag cascade as the rooftop mini-boss; verify availability at launch.
7. Soul Farming Opportunities
Chapter 3 has stronger farming potential than Chapters 1 and 2 thanks to the elite Genma guards at the temple entrance and a handful of temple interior respawn points. The temple approach is currently expected to be the most efficient pre-boss farming area.
| Location | Enemy Type | Soul Yield (Est.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temple Approach — outer wardens | Elite Genma Guard | TBD | Higher yield than scout-tier enemies. Strong farming option. |
| Temple interiors | Mixed Genma units | TBD | Multiple respawn points across the chapter. |
| Secret rooftop branch | Mini-boss + adds | TBD | One-shot respawn. Best drop-per-run value. |
Specific soul yields will be verified against the launch build. For now, Chapter 3's elite Genma guards at the temple approach are the best pre-boss farming option. The Souls guide breaks down higher-yield areas in later chapters.
