This is the launch-day version of the Chapter 2 walkthrough. Combat mechanics, encounter layouts, and mini-boss stats are verified against the official demo and pre-release press materials. The spirit-vision cutscene script and any hidden NPC dialogue branches are flagged as "To be verified at launch" and will be confirmed when the game ships on September 4, 2026.
Chapter 2 is 2–2.5 hours focused on the Issen mechanic. You'll learn the counter-attack system from a spirit vision, face multiple Genma Brute elites, and reach the mountain temple. Introduces the Twin Fangs dual blades.

Chapter 2 is the Issen tutorial. The Issen is the core combat system in Way of the Sword — a high-damage counter-attack that follows a successful parry, with a small timing window that rewards aggression over defense. This chapter also adds ranged pressure via the Genma Archer, forcing you to learn ranged parries alongside the basic combo flow.
2. Main Objectives
- Leave the shrine — Talk to the Oni Clan ally before departing. Optional dialogue adds lore.
- Cross the forest path (darker, more dangerous) — The lighting is dimmer and enemies are more aggressive.
- Encounter the first Genma ambush — Mixed group of Brutes and the first Genma Archer.
- Receive the Issen vision (tutorial cutscene) — A spirit teaches the Issen counter-attack at a stone circle.
- Clear the Genma outpost — Larger combat arena with 8–10 mixed enemies.
- Reach the mountain temple entrance — Linear path with narrow bridges and a hidden alcove.
- Defeat the Genma Brute Elite — Mini-boss fight. Specific reward values To be verified at launch
Don't spend souls on weapons here — the Twin Fangs are a free pickup and the Onimaru still outperforms them in raw damage until you unlock the Tier-2 weapon upgrades. Spend souls on Parry Window+ and Rapid Charge instead. Both skills pay for themselves before the Chapter 3 boss.
3. Walkthrough
Section 1 — Leaving the Shrine
The chapter opens at the Oni Clan shrine. You have one final conversation with your ally before crossing into Genma-controlled territory.
- Talk to the Oni Clan ally (optional dialogue, backstory about the Onimaru and the spirit visions).
- Receive the Twin Fangs as a sidearm — use Triangle / Y mid-combo to switch weapons.
- The Twin Fangs hit faster but deal less per swing. They pair well with Rapid Charge, which you'll unlock at the spirit vision.
Section 2 — Forest Path (Extended)
The Forest Path from Chapter 1, but darker and packed with additional enemies. This is your first taste of ranged pressure.
- Tighter corridors, multiple enemy encounters — expect to fight 3–4 Genma Brutes plus 1 Genma Archer.
- Archer: parry incoming arrows with L1 / LB (timing window is intentionally wide on the first encounter).
- Soul tip: 6–8 Genma enemies total, ~640 yellow souls if you clear everything.
Section 3 — Issen Vision
Reach the spirit stone circle deep in the forest. This is the chapter's centerpiece — a vision that teaches the Issen. Cutscene script and dialogue To be verified at launch
- Reach the spirit stone circle (cutscene triggers automatically).
- Vision teaches Issen: press R1 / RB immediately after a successful parry for a devastating counter-attack.
- Practice dummy: parry → Issen (massive damage on the dummy's yellow stagger bar).
- After the vision, unlock the Rapid Charge skill — holding R2 / RT then tapping attack now deals a charged strike with the Twin Fangs.
Issen is the highest single-hit damage you can deal in Chapter 2. The window after a successful parry is ~6 frames — practice it on the spirit dummies until you can chain parry → Issen consistently. If you miss the window, you can still follow up with a regular combo, but you'll lose the bonus damage.
Section 4 — Genma Outpost
A larger combat arena that serves as the chapter's soul farming milestone. Mixed enemy composition forces you to manage threat priorities.
- 8–10 enemies total: 4–6 Brutes, 2 Archers, plus 2 Fast Scouts.
- Priority: take out Archers first. Their ranged pressure punishes reckless aggression.
- Use Twin Fangs for groups (fast swings clear crowds), Onimaru for single high-HP targets.
- Soul reward: ~1200 yellow souls on a clean clear.
Section 5 — Mountain Temple Approach
The final pre-boss sequence: a linear path with narrow bridges leading to the temple entrance.
- Linear path with narrow bridges — no combat puzzles, but watch for falling debris on the second bridge.
- Hidden alcove (right side, after the second bridge): 1x Skill Upgrade Material + small soul cache.
- Save point at the temple entrance — use it before the mini-boss.
- Hidden NPC encounter: an Oni Clan scout appears near the temple gate if you take a specific path off the main road. Exact trigger conditions To be verified at launch
4. Boss Fight — Genma Brute Elite
Genma Brute Elite
The Genma Brute Elite is an enhanced variant of the standard Genma Brute — slower, harder-hitting, and with two extra attack patterns compared to the base enemy. This is the chapter's mini-boss and your first real test of the Issen timing window.
Quick tips:
- 6 attack patterns (vs 4 for the normal Brute). The extra two are a slow overhead slam (perfect Issen target) and a delayed two-hit combo (parry the second hit).
- Parry window is ~6 frames. If you have Parry Window+ from the skill tree, this fight is much more forgiving.
- Save Issen for when his yellow bar is visible — Issen deals bonus damage on yellow-barred enemies.
- Don't button-mash: his two-hit combo punishes greedy aggression.
Recommended level: 5–7 (clear the Genma Outpost 3x for ~3600 souls before the fight).
Rewards: 800 yellow souls, Genma Fang (weapon upgrade material), 1 Skill Point.

| Skill Upgrade Material | Hidden alcove (temple approach, right side) | Unlocks a new skill tree node |
| Health Vial x5 | Forest path, Outpost, temple approach | Restore 30% HP on use |

6. Missables
Chapter 2 has four recoverable pickups. Make a manual save at the temple entrance save point to ensure you can recover any of these without losing outpost progress.
- Hidden alcove upgrade material (right side of the temple approach). Easy to miss if you're focused on the bridges.
- Optional dialogue with the shrine ally (before leaving the Chapter 1 shrine). One-time conversation, missable if you skip it.
- Genma Fang from boss — if you skip the boss via an alternate path alternate path To be verified at launch, you lose the upgrade material permanently for this chapter.
- Oni Clan's Map Fragment — only appears if you take the specific off-road branch near the temple gate. Trigger conditions To be verified at launch
7. Soul Farming Opportunities
| Location | Enemies | Souls / Clear | Respawns? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genma Outpost | 8–10 mixed Brutes + Archers + Scouts | ~1200 yellow | Yes (checkpoint) |
| Forest Path ambush | 6–8 Brutes + Archer | ~640 yellow | Yes (checkpoint) |
Recommended: clear the Genma Outpost 3 times before the Genma Brute Elite for ~3600 yellow souls. Buy Parry Window+ (500 souls) and Rapid Charge (800 souls), then save the remaining 2300 for Chapter 3's skill unlocks. Don't over-farm — the Temple gauntlet in Chapter 3 is a much better soul-per-minute rate.
