Chance Encounters are 18 side missions scattered across Kyoto. Speak to someone at the mission marker (Notebook icon on map) to start. 5 are Hidden Treasure hunts (hardest). Trophy: No Job Too Small.
1. Overview
Chance Encounters are side missions scattered across Kyoto in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. They appear on the map as Notebook icons. Each encounter can be a rescue mission, combat scenario, archery target challenge (Ace Archer), or Hidden Treasure hunt.
You can complete all Chance Encounters up until the Point of No Return before "The Clash At Rendaino". Make a manual save at that point to clean up anything you missed.
Ace Archer — practice archery target challenge. Hit targets within a time limit to earn skill points.
Hidden Treasure — the hardest. Begin when an NPC hands you an Old Drawing. Travel to the depicted location and find the hidden chest.
Standard — rescue villagers, clear enemies, or other combat scenarios.

3. Strategy & Tips
- Notebook icons on the map mark every Chance Encounter. They become visible as the story progresses.
- Speak to the NPC at the marker to begin the encounter. Some start with dialogue, others begin immediately.
- Hidden Treasure hunts begin when an NPC hands you an Old Drawing. The drawing depicts a scene you must find in the world and locate the buried or hidden chest.
- Ace Archers reward you based on accuracy and time. Higher scores yield better skill point rewards.
- Standard encounters are usually short — clear enemies or rescue an NPC within the designated area.
- Save before long exploration sessions — Kyoto is large and some encounters are in remote corners.
Clear encounters as they unlock during your natural story progression. By the time you reach "In the Light of an Icy Moon", all 18 will be available. Hidden Treasure #5 contains a Skeleton Hozuki needed for the Medical Marvel trophy, so prioritize it.
