What counts as a "secret boss"?
The seven duels below are not flagged as boss fights. They appear in your quest log as "Stray Oni" or "Echo," and the boss bar UI is suppressed unless you have Oni Vision active. They are part of the Mysteries of Kyoto layer (see our Mysteries walkthrough for the full list), but we list them separately here because each one has a unique loot table and two of them gate trophies.
Duel 1 โ Chapter 3, Lantern Ascent (Sokushi-type)
How to find: Behind the third broken lantern in the riverside corridor. HP: 4,200. Reward: Rune Sword token (Level 2). Missable: No (re-spawns in NG+). Recommended loadout: Onimaru+1, parry-cancel build.
This is the easiest of the seven and a good warm-up. One-frame parry window, so bring tier 3 talent if you have it.
Duel 2 โ Chapter 5, Wormley Ways Shrine (Viper-type)
How to find: Through the second left at the Winding Ways switchback. HP: 6,800. Reward: Echo fragment (yellow soul drop +5%). Missable: Yes โ the shrine is one-way; if you fall into the Genma ambush, you cannot re-enter. Recommended loadout: Onimaru+2, any tier 3 talent.
The Chapter 5 save room is the only one before the Wormley Ways detour. The fall into the Genma ambush is a hard fail โ no second chance.
Duel 3 โ Chapter 6, Floating Pagoda Vault (Oni-type)
How to find: Behind the breakable wall at the back of the Floating Pagoda. HP: 9,400. Reward: Tachibana Yuki Rune Sword itself. Missable: No (story-gated). Recommended loadout: Kaneshige+0, Oni Vision active.
This is the only story-gated duel โ the chapter does not progress until you defeat it. Tachibana Yuki is the reward; you cannot leave the room without picking it up.
Duel 4 โ Chapter 7, Quiet Halls (Triple Genma)
How to find: The "Up" branch of the Chapter 7 triple Mystery. HP: 5,200 each (15,600 total). Reward: Kaneshige+4 token. Missable: Yes โ the "Up" path is one-way. Recommended loadout: Kaneshige+3 minimum, with stagger-break talent.
Three Genma at once is the only triple-fight in the game. The stagger-break talent from the Issen branch is essentially required here.
Duel 5 โ Chapter 9, Mountain Pass Tower Shrine (Striker-type)
How to find: Across the rope bridge, opposite the Enryuu chest. HP: 11,200. Reward: Enryuu+2 token. Missable: No (the elevator does not bypass the rope bridge area). Recommended loadout: Enryuu+0, Oni Vision active.
The Striker-type has a 6-hit combo followed by a 4-second recovery. That is your only damage window. Practice the parry chain on the regular Sokushi patrols before attempting.
Duel 6 โ Chapter 11, Empty Library (Scholar-type)
How to find: Behind the second save room of Chapter 11. HP: 14,800. Reward: Tachibana Yuki+3 token. Missable: Yes โ the library is one-way and the puzzle is no-reset. Recommended loadout: Yuki+1, Soul Siphon passive.
The Scholar-type summons 2 phantom Genma every 30 seconds. They have 800 HP each and die in one heavy hit, but they interrupt your parry chain. Save Yuki's Oni Art for the phantoms.
Duel 7 โ Chapter 12, Hidden Courtyard (Bishamon)
How to find: After the Chapter 12 courtyard, choose "fight" instead of "leave" on the 90-second prompt. HP: 22,000. Reward: Bishamon Rune Sword. Missable: Yes โ the only way to leave the prompt is to choose "leave," which skips the fight and the sword for the rest of the run. Recommended loadout: Kaneshige+3 and Yuki+1 minimum.
There is no NG+ unlock path. Skipping the Chapter 12 prompt locks you out of the true ending for that save file. Always make a separate save before Chapter 12.
Which secret bosses gate trophies?
- Chapter 6 Floating Pagoda duel โ Tachibana Yuki trophy (unlocks with the sword).
- Chapter 12 Bishamon duel โ Bishamon trophy + true ending flag.
- All 7 duels defeated โ "Way of the Oni" trophy (5,000 red soul payout).
Build recommendations by duel
The seven duels favor different builds. If you are running a single playthrough, the Soul branch with the Soul Siphon passive at tier 4+ is the best generalist โ it lets you fund the weapon upgrades you need between duels. For the Chapter 7 triple-fight specifically, dip into the Issen branch for the stagger-break talent, then return to Soul.
