Genma Notes are 23 lore documents about demons scattered across Kyoto. The ONLY collectibles not naturally marked on the map. Requires Oni Power to reveal hidden chests. Trophy: Genma-ologist.
1. Overview
Genma Notes are 23 lore documents about the demons and history of the Genma invasion, scattered across Kyoto and its surrounding areas in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Collecting all 23 unlocks the Genma-ologist trophy.
Unlike Lion Dogs, Hozuki Pouches, or Mystery items, Genma Notes are the only collectibles not naturally marked on the in-game map. You must rely on Oni Vision / Oni Power to reveal the hidden chests that contain them.
Genma Notes are stored inside hidden chests that only appear when you activate Oni Power in the correct spot. Walk near the listed landmark, hold the Oni Power button, and the chest will materialize. Do NOT cross the Point of No Return before "The Clash At Rendaino" until you've cleaned up any missing notes — make a manual save at that point and use it to sweep the remaining locations via free-roam.
Use Oni Vision (purchasable skill) to detect hidden chests in areas. Most notes are found in boss arena locations as a reward for revisiting previous boss rooms in free-roam. Note #23 (Final Note) is missable if you skip the final mission content after the Point of No Return.

3. Strategy & Tips
- Use Oni Power liberally — most Genma Notes are inside chests that don't exist in the world until Oni Power is activated in the right spot. Don't just walk past landmarks — sweep them.
- Revisit boss arenas in free-roam — many notes are tucked inside previously visited boss rooms as a reward for backtracking after Oni Vision / Oni Power is unlocked.
- Save before the Point of No Return — make a manual save before "The Clash At Rendaino" so you can clean up any stragglers without losing story progress.
- Mount Oe Valley has two notes (#6 Oboro Garasu and #9 Hirehime) — both require platforming tricks (wall run / lower water route), so don't skip the side paths.
- Underground Laboratory holds two notes (#5 Kogashira and #8 Chijiko) — sweep both Underground Level 2 and Underground Level 3.
- Final Note (#23) is missable — finish every available event in the final mission before rolling credits.
- Spirit Mirror sweep — start at every Spirit Mirror, activate Oni Power, and move outward in a slow spiral.
- Boss room sweep — every main boss arena contains or borders at least one Genma Note. Re-enter after the boss dies.
- Track the counter — the in-game Genma Notes count is visible in the collectibles menu. Once you're past 20, focus on the final-mission note.
- Mount Oe wall run — required for #6 Oboro Garasu. Make sure the wall run ability is unlocked before going for it.
