VERIFIED IN FULL GAME — PATCH 1.0 · All 25 Tamahagane locations, mission rewards, and Hidden Treasure chests cross-checked against PowerPyx.
TL;DR
Tamahagane are 25 equipment upgrade materials needed to fully enhance all equipment. Find them in chests and as rewards from completing missions, mysteries, and chance encounters. Trophy: Dressed to Kill.
Tamahagane (玉鋼) is a rare Japanese steel historically used to forge legendary katanas. In Onimusha: Way of the Sword, it functions as a high-tier equipment upgrade material used to enhance your blades at the smithy. Combined with Fine Silk Cloth, collecting every Tamahagane unlocks the Dressed to Kill trophy.
Tamahagane is found through three primary sources:
Chests scattered across Kyoto, Mount Oe, Arashiyama, and Shanaoh Castle
Mission rewards from completing Mysteries of Kyoto
Chance Encounter rewards, particularly the Ace Archer challenges
Important — Point of No Return
You can free-roam and find all 25 Tamahagane up until the Point of No Return before "The Clash At Rendaino". Several chests are in Shanaoh Castle which only opens in the late game. Make a manual save at that point so you can clean up anything you missed before committing to the final sequence.
What Tamahagane Is Used For
Tamahagane is required for sword upgrades at the smithy, combined with Whetstone + Iron + Tempered Iron. Each sword has multiple upgrade tiers, and fully enhancing your weapons demands the entire 25-piece set across your arsenal.

3. Strategy & Tips
Mark Spirit Mirrors on your map — every chest location references a nearby Spirit Mirror as its anchor point. Fast-travel between mirrors to sweep each region efficiently.
Clear Mysteries of Kyoto as they unlock — five Tamahagane (#5, #9, #13, #21) come straight from completing named story missions.
Don't skip Ace Archer challenges — three of the 25 Tamahagane (#10, #14, #24) come exclusively from archery Chance Encounter rewards.
Re-enter Mount Oe and Arashiyama after the main story opens them up — the castle courtyard (#18), Togetsu-kyo path (#23), and Hidden Treasure #4 (#19) only become accessible in the late game.
Save before final boss — Tamahagane #25 is in the room right after the Byakue fight in Shanaoh Castle. A manual save before that boss lets you confirm the pickup without losing progress.
Dressed to Kill Trophy
The Dressed to Kill trophy requires collecting all 25 Tamahagane and all 25 Fine Silk Cloth. Use our Fine Silk Cloth locations guide in parallel to track both materials at once.
